Default Broken Timing Chain & Piston Damage

I broke a timing chain at around 4500 RPM. I pulled the heads off and found that I had bent just about every valve. These pistons only have about 5k on them. I took a picture of the piston that looks the worst, all the others look better then this one. Do you think they will be OK if I just file down the rough edges and make them smooth? The damage to the pistons are not as bad as I thought it would be. I was planing on spraying a 200hp shot on this motor. Just looking for opinions. Would you change the pistons out or not?

What timing chain were you using? I'd think it would be ok if you smoothed out the pistons..... they dont look too terribly bad.

if that is the worst one you shouldn't be too worried, alittle sanding will make them good as new.your pistons look very clean, what quench are you running ? sorry about the bad luck, timing chains seem to be a rare problem on these motors unless they are wore out something fierce.

That really doesn't look bad at all. I smacked a few pistons a while back and looked worse than yours. I just smoothed mine out and have been running with them since. No problems yet.

Were you running a single or double chain?

If that's the worst one then your ok in my book. Smooth the lip on the dish so it doesn't create a hot spot and put it back together. Could have been a lot worse brother.

Thanks guys! I really did not think the damage was that bad. Its good to get some other opinions though. I'm going to get a valve job done on the heads and put it back together.

I was running a single rollmaster chain. I took the chain off of another motor with very few miles on it. Maybe that chain had streched some how, I don't know. This is on a C5R block so I'm going to replace it with a the JWIS chain and run a timing chain dampener. The chain did seem loose compared to other LS1's I have worked on.
