Default Easy block-off plate for FRA mod w/in

I visited John Lingenfelter's shop last week & took a tour, and the guy who showed me around commented that they have seen "several" hydro-locked LS1's due to water ingestion. Most of the cars he's seen with that problem were 'Vettes, which have a lower air intake than F-bods. I'd heard the same "water in the intake" warning from our very own Fbodfather in the past, so this got me thinking...

Since my car is a daily driver--rain, snow, or shine--making a block-off of some sort for the free ram air mod that I've done probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

An hour and 20-some dremel cut-off wheels later, here is what I came up with:

The black plastic piece is the "frame" that the air filter sits in. I did not modify it at all.
I used heavy-gauge stainless steel sheet metal (which I had lying around) for the block-off plates, then drilled 2 holes in each plate for the machine screws, which hold the plates in. I cut off the points of the machine screws once the holes were threaded. The result should keep any water from reaching the air filter, and it's easily installed/removed in 3 minutes with a Phillips screwdriver.

I actually did something very similar to this, but made it out of the top of my old FTRA. Since I was upping my engine size/power at considerable expense, I did not want the FTRA blocking off too much of my radiator anymore. This left me with the FRA, so I simply cut the top plate off of my old FTRA, kept their blocking plate, and now had something similar to this. Works very well, and can be taken on/off in about 3-5 minutes.

I consider this a must mod if the bottom of your air box is open - the thought of looking at the pistons/rods of a hydrolocked engine could make me cry . On the other hand, I would do the fabrication you suggested above, since most people have little reason to trash their FTRA if they have one.
