i'm sure i saw a website with someone pulling an ls1 from the top. i know i have to remove the manifold , but are there any tricks to this?? any tips or techniques??
I have pulled 4 different LS1 motors from 4 different F-bodies including mine....and they all came out through the top. I have some pics on my website. <img src="graemlins/gr_chug.gif" border="0" alt="[chug]" />
Mine came out the top last time, and will come out the top this time as well... It's really not difficult.
The key thing that worked for me is to turn the engine sideways as it's coming out, and end up with it at 90 degrees by the time it's all the way up. It's hard to explain...
You will want to remove the intake manifold, any accessories you can (PS, waterpump, etc) and the crank pulley. After that it's pretty much ready to go.

Mine came straight out. You just have to remove everything from the engine before you pull it out. Basically, you want to strip it down to the long block.
