Default Down to choice between MTI and GTP heads...

Man I'm getting close to buying my Stage II heads, but am wondering about a few things.

I need some nudging in one direction or the other. I do know that MTI uses larger valves on their heads, but I've been seeing some damn impressive numbers and runs out of the GTP guys as well.

Right now, I'm using an MTI/Lunati T1 cam with Isky valve springs and titanium retainers.

I already know that MTI Stage II heads use the double springs, and I won't be able to transfer my springs, retainers, and pushrods over (5K miles on this stuff so far).

I'm wondering if I could use these valvetrain items on the GTP heads without too much trouble. I see that GTP does offer their stage II heads using the new 918 springs, so I'm thinking I might be able to use my springs and retainers on them.

I'm usually not so cheap as to compromise by using existing valvetrain hardware, but I don't have too many miles on this stuff, and it is working well so far with my T1 cam. My god, if I could end up with decent Stage II heads for about $1700-$1800 by using my existing valvetrain hardware, I would be jumping all over that!

What do you guys think?

"What do you guys think?"

I think MTI heads are hard to beat. I also think they could do you a set that would work with your existing valvetrain. Give 'em a call and ask Jeff.

I second GTP. I know lots of people running them and are very happy.

I'll second "MTI"...Too many proven set ups out on the streets and tracks showing the kind of work that comes out of MTI...Years and years of R&D from Jayson and his crew. I know Robert does some of the best heads I've seen with some unbelievable flow #'s. Yes there are I'm sure some other good head shops but MTI has proven themselves so many times and ALWAYS stand by their work.

I'd recommend you consider selling your current valvesprings and retainers cheaply and just upgrading to the custom dual-springs if you get heads. That way you are also purchasing piece of mind that these duals aren't going to give you any problems.

I didn't have it so bad, I used to carry extra Comp 941 springs with me in my toolbox, which stayed in the trunk of my car. Had to do emergency parking lot valvespring swaps a couple times, what a pain in the ***!

MTI cars are very consistent, thats for sure.

I recently asked almost the same question on this board.

I concluded that I couldn't justify the extra money for the MTI heads. Even though MTI puts in larger valves and supposedly beefier springs, many people have said that on a stock bore motor larger valves DO NOT make more power.

As for the springs, MTI will tell you themselves that the comp 918 spring is fine for their B1/T1 cam. They did state that the 941 is not all that good though.

GTP has a proven track record too. You can't go wrong with either head. I decided to go with GTP and I will post my results when the heads are built.
