Default Need some help setting timing

Hey all, I need a hand if possible. I don't have anything fancy, it's a 1990 Pontiac LeMans. 4 cylinder, 1.6 L engine. I just finished putting it back together, but don't know how to set my timing. I've had a few people tell me their way, but haven't completely understood yet. I have the belt lined up, but I don't understand how to turn the distributor until it's set, or whatever that's all about. Could someone give me a pretty detailed description of how to set the timing. Thanks for helping.

Is this a joke? Why would you register on an LS1/LS6 engine performance site to ask about a 1990 Pontiac LeMans?

Does that car even have an alternator? I figure it would probably be EFI by now and require computer tuning to change the timing. Why would you want more timing from a LeMans anyways?
