Default To Supra or not to Supra

I know its not technically a "tech" question, but figured Id get a good response. Ive got someone who is very interested in my TA. Now the question is, do I sell it, and if so, do I buy a Supra, or possibly a Truck and a bike. Now I go to school in Rochester so I need a car for the snow, and Im probably gonna buy my sisters POS honda off of her if i keep the TA or get a Supra. I love my TA, but I test drove a couple of Supras and was very impressed with their comparable performance and overall quality. Ive also heard that you can get 400 rwhp out of them for about 1200 bucks and have them be dead on realiable. But then again, a new Yamaha R1 puts both cars to shame, and a truck would be nice for tooling around in the winter. Any and all opinions are very welcome. Thanks gusy.

If the Supra you are going to get is a twin turbo, then it is an easy choice. Stillen.com has a million add on parts for Supras and you can get them upwards of 600-750 RWHP for about the cost of a high end head and cam package for an LS1. Plus they are fairly reliable.

I love Supras and if they still made them today and looked cool, I would own one right now. But I am not one for buying used cars, especially with Turbos that don't have a warranty. They tend to be the first thing to give you problems on an older car.

But Supras are the king of import cars in my opinion.

Get a supra plus it has traction control for the winter and rain.I swear it is the only car I have been in the rain with where you can floor it and it will actually stay straight and not get loose and thats with trac. control off.I guessit has to do with independent rearend.I love the interior it feels like your in a jet cockpit and with the targa top off there is no stopping you.It will be a big honey magnet plus the car will last well over 100,000 miles. My friend sold his to my other friend who had beat the hell out of that car and the stock turbos finally went out.Keep in mind this was with no down pipe and 20plus psi whenever he could(no exeternal wastegate). Now the car is pumping out over 500 plus horsepower with that same beat up block.I would get one if you can bro.

They are great cars, but I'm sure you don't believe that you can get 600 rwhp for what a H/C package costs. I've worked on many BPU and higher Supras (even before the MKIV), and it'll take a little more than that. The only way would be Juicing it, and the factory fuel system would need a supplemental at that level.

Good luck finding one that hasn't been ragged on & If you think LS1 parts are expensive, wait till you see what Supra stuff runs!

Keep the T/A. If you’ve ever seen a dyno graph of a Supra you can see why around town driving is not much fun with a Supra. They make basically no torque/power till 4 grand, so unless you want to be stepping into it hard all the time you won’t get that same low end torque thrust factor that a V8 will give you.

Plus, (and this is strictly my opinion) Supras are BUTT ugly. If you must have a turbo import look at some 300ZX TTs. These are MUCH better looking cars than Supras, IMO.

And if all you want is a easily modded, turbo’ed, cheap to get into the 11s car, get a Grand National. Dollar for dollar, there really is no other turbo car that can go as fast as a GN for the money you’ll spend.

But if handling is another factor for you, and you like F-bodies but still want a turbo car that can be modded easily, look into ’89 Turbo T/As. Same motor as a GN and the same mods apply, but with this car you get good braking and handling too (unlike a GN).

And if you really want a newer car, IMO, just keep the T/A and buy that Honda for the snow. I would never be caught dead selling a T/A to buy a Supra. I’d kill myself first. Just IMO...

You're right, this doesn't belong in the tech section. So why did you post it here?

Most Supras are good at making "peak" rwhp on the dynojet, but they typically SUCK for area under the HP curve. I raced quite a few BPU Supras (all around 400-420 rwhp) back when I had heads/cam (390-405 rwhp) and I walked all of them at the track and on the street.

As a general estimate on how to compare Supras to F-bodies in terms of power, a 500 rwhp Supra is usually a good match for a 450 rwhp F-body. They seem to need a least 50+ more rwhp to hang since their curves are so peaky.

But, the Supra is a nice car, and is the ONLY somewhat affordable import performance car I would consider right now. But, like the others say, good luck on finding one that hasn't been beat on by some riceboy schmuck. LOL!
