Default Comp Cam 918 spring + 772 Retainers = TIGHT fit?

For those that installed there Comp Cam 918 Springs along with the Comp Cam 772 Ti Retainers were the retainers a tight fit on the springs?

We just got our springs and retainers yesterday. While placing the retainers on the springs, we noticed the fit was kind of tight. Comp Cam said this was normal and to use sand paper on the retainer if needed. Any input?

Thanks,
Teddy

When the 772s first came out they were actually a loose fit. Shortly after that they were modified to fit better (tighter) with the 26918s. So yes, I would imagine that this tight fit is in fact normal.

A tight fit is want you want here, and is perfectly normal.

Comp cam was saying a tight fit is what you want (I agree), but I'm not sure about having to sand the retainers. I think for the price of these components, you shouldn't have to sand anything. The Ti retainers do fit perfectly on the stock LS1 springs from what my friend said.

I believe the tightness is from the 918's top coil. I'll have to post some pictures when I get some pictures.

I didn't have to sand/grind anything on mine, but they did take some pressure to get them to snap into place.

I've seen engine builders forced to resort to using a bench vise to snap retainers on valvesprings before.

I took some pictures tonight and got all the Ti retainers to fit on the 918 springs. 7 Ti retainers fit the 918 springs with slight pressure. 4 retainers I sanded slightly with fine sand paper and applied with some hand pressure. 5 fit with no sanding and lots of hand pressure.

Here's the pictures.

Stock 98 spring on the left and the beefy comp cam 918 on the right.

Stock 98 retainer on the top and light weight slightly larger diameter Comp Cam Ti retainer on the bottom.

The stock spring with Ti retainer on the left (good fit but slightly loose). 918 spring with the Ti retainer (doesn't fit without pressure).

The stock spring with stock retainer on the left (good fit but slightly loose). 918 spring with the Ti retainer (not loose and very snug fit).

One more picture.

A stock 1998 spring with stock retainer on the left. A 2002 LS6 spring with the stock retainer in the middle. The new Comp Cam 26918 spring with the new Comp Cam 772 Ti retainer on the right.

That should pretty much explain it all... Looks like a rod bearing may have spun, then frozen up, causing the rod to break...

I should have the car back home next week, and have the motor out of it shortly thereafter to find out exactly what went wrong.

Hey Teddy, since you have an LS6 spring to compare with, does that mean that you're doing a cam swap on the ZO6? <img src="gr_stretch.gif" border="0"> Which car are you bringing to Ennis on the 2nd?

I'm going to be installing 918's in the next month. Should I get the 772 retainers or is it ok to use the stock ones?

Trevor, the LS6 spring came from an extra set of '02 LS6 heads. No cam change in the Z06. If I race on the 2nd it will most likely be in the Z28.

Eric, the stock retainers will work with the 918's. I got the 772's because they are lighter and stronger.

So stock locks and retainers can be used with these springs?

Yes. 772s will probably premote longer spring life though...
