I just picked up a 2002 trans am motor. The guy said almost all
2002 motors were Ls6 blocks and they had the LS6 intake also.

From what ive heard some of the 02 motors used LS6 blocks, the reason they used the remaing quanity they had because it was the last of the production F-bodys. To be sure you would have to check the casting numbers

LS6 intakes - yes

LS6 blocks - yes and no

My 2002 had a regular LS1 block. The LS6 block doesn't mean anything in terms of power production, so don't worry about it.

The LS6 block is really just the new version of the old LS1 block, or so I've heard. I bet they didn't want to have 2 different inventories and 2 different castings to support. So when they ran out of 'old style' LS1 blocks they just started using the 'new style' or LS6 block. The same goes for the LS6 intake. Also, the PCM was changed, exhaust manifolds, rod bolts, etc. lots of things changed between 2000 and 2001 when the LS6 first appeared. I think Vettes got the new blocks first and then by late 2001 the F-Bodies started to get them.A friend of mine has a very late 2000 FRC with an LS6 block, but he had an LS1 manifold...

OK, but that does not make it a LS6 motor right??
I'm sure the heads, cam, and a few other
things had to be different right??

If so, What would it take to make my motor a
Ls6 replica?? 405 HP

Absolutely correct...an LS1 with an LS6 block is still an LS1. What made the LS6 an LS6 were the cam and heads. Search around on here, and you'll find the differences pretty easily. This information has been discussed time and time again.

405 replica,forget that.If you got a 01 blk with the casting #1168 just order a set of 243 cnc ported heads,bigger cam like Torqer3,7.400 pushrodds,ls2 tchain= a better replica.Just my opinion

My car came with the ls6 block and i did not know at first until i saw my friends 02 ta and his block was a different color aluminum. The ls6 is a darker aluminum due to a different casting process. Also on the passanger side between the head and the water pump if you have a bullseye looking thin then you have a ls1 block but if there is no bullseye then it is a ls6 block. But only way to be 100% is to check block numbers.

I have an 01 SS that came with the ls6 block,ls6 camshaft and 241 heads from the factory. With a lid it laid down 330rwhp and 341rwtq nothing else touched.I agree with the above ls6 block gives you no more power just better bay 2 bay breathing.Correct me if Im wrong but I think 10-15% of 01-02 f-bodys received the ls6 block due to over production.

Last I heard, it was no more than 1 out of 6 got an LS6 block if you did the math. But, I still think that's a bit high.

Yeah the numbers are something like 20% got an LS6 block. But who cares? I heard the LS6 block is slightly weaker than the LS1 block somehow.

Slightly, but not really noticeable.. some builders won't sleeve an LS6 block, and have no problem sleeving an LS1 block.

Nope, the LS6 is stronger and a major improvement is in oil handling in the bottom end. The LS6 has different casting pattern (bigger "windows") in the bottom to allow the oil to get out of the way of the rotating bits faster/easier. It was designed stronger since it has to handle an additional 100 HP.

I have the definitive book, but it's back at the house so I can't provide a specific quote. The design of the LS1 was completed around 1997 and the LS6 about three years later. Lots of more computer time to make it better, which is why that intake manifold is more efficient, etc. The book said that an LS1 can easily handle 530 HP with stock internals, but over that pistons, rods, and bolts should be changed (if I remember it right).
