Question Critique my proposed combo

Just to clarify, I'm not looking for a ton of peak power or a monster strip setup. I live in Chicago and DD this car in rush hour traffic everyday. I'm looking to put together a budget street combo that doesn't have to rev over 6500 so don't jump all over me for the rather mild combo. My current mods are listed in my sig.

Since Patriot has a nice deal on the bare 243 castings I was planning on going with those and doing one of the following.

1. Use the LS6 springs they are offering for an extra $20 and go with a low lift cam like the much maligned hotcam.

2. I could "spring" for a set of the 918's and then run one of the popular 224/224 112 cams out there.

I'm looking to hit 400 rwhp with a nice broad torque curve. I'm open to any other suggestions so let me know what you guys think.

Why not a 224/228 cam?

It is possible if you have all the supporting bolt on mods. I personally went bigger with a 232 234 in my daily driver.

My 221/221 made more power in the same motor than a 224/228. I'd pick a 224/224 over an exhaust biased split solely based on the findings of Thunder Racing when they were experimenting with reverse splits like the 230/224 111 +0.

Thanks for the feedback so far, but keep it coming. I'm not opposed to going bigger than a 224 cam, but based on the powerband I'm looking for the 224 seemed like a good choice. I think something like the 228R from TSP might also work nicely.

Gunnar from Patriot has a thread going in this section regarding some of the Xmas deals they have right now. They are selling bare 243 casting for $350 per set, $25 extra for stock valves, and $20 for LS6 springs.

i really think you'd be happy with a set of some PRC/patriot/(or any other brand) ls6 ported heads- stage 1's...and a TR224 cam....honestly thats a GREAT set up and you should get close to your wanted power level...do NOT waste your time with a hot cam...forget BABY, that cam is a FETUS compared to other small cams

thats my $0.02

I deal with the chicago traffic much like you do and took that into consideration when I made my cam choice. I went with a 222/222, .561, 114 LSA cam and I couldn't ask for more. I did go with 918 springs though. It made 382 rwhp last summer, STOCK heads, and boltons. Idles smooth, decent gas mileage (especially hwy), broad powerband. I'm sure your setup with some LS6 heads will get you pretty close to 400rwhp, ported heads would put you over that. Good luck with your decision! Keep us posted, I'm curious to see if you hit 400 rwhp with unported LS6 heads.

Agree with everyone else, go BIGGER. Spend teh cash on the gold duals, theyre not that much money. You can always find a used cam and used pushrods to save a few bucks. Also, you might consider touching up those heads just a little, or if youre not able to do it yourself, have someone do them.
