I worked for a chevy dealer and believe it or not we had a problem with(now get this) CRANK LINE BORE! yes. LS1 cars & trucks. Trucks mostly.Replacement of motor. Ratteling on start up? Pistons! So what now you ask? Nothing! No fix at this time.we did malibu's 'pistons' and when I would take them out, 2 would have 'black skirts', 4 would not. Imagine that! Replaced with all black skirts. The reason the rattle was happening was the 'lil tail off the pistons was shortend and the piston 'slapped'.Dam enginers.

They are hypereutectic cast aluminum. Stronger than ordinary cast, but not as strong as forged aluminum.
