Ok, i have NEVER used the "magnet trick". Never needed too.
But some folks buy 16 extendable magnets and stick them down the lifter/pus rod holes till they touch the lifter and leave them there after they have been secured. This is to provide some incentive to keep the lifters from falling.

I just take out the push rods. Rotate the cam both ways 3~4 times. Pull out the old cam... insert the new cam and youre done with that part. Have the new cam lubed and ready to go so the time the motor is "cam-less" is minimal.

Put your bolts in baggies and use a marker to label where the bolts come from. (water pump, timing cover, etc)

Good luck.

How did I know that you were going to ask that..

Funny how the girls need that quality time,
and you beast of a car waits silently in the
garage for the new gift.

Good for you bookerman, your comments about first the TB then a year later a cam. I think thats the road I will eventually take. The last time I actually took apart an engine and put it back together was back in the early 70's. Nothing like jumping right in.
And TA_2001 I read through the article you mentioned, changing the cam. Great! work I enjoyed the read.
