Default Should we be concerned about our LS1/LS6 blocks....read within..

I received this e-mail from a guy that works at a GM Dealership. I cut and pasted the whole note below:
[quote]Hi John, I thought I'd send you a little heads up info. I work at a Chevy dealer in South Florida, we had a ZO6 Vette in last week that wouldn't start. Come to find out after a quick look see the starter had broken the block, took the outer bolt hole clean off. Our district rep came down for a look see (since he has to authorize all major engine claims) and mentioned that he's seen a few do that (not just ZO6s). So, it might be worth your time to fabricate a starter brace to secure the back of the starter to the side of the block.

Anyone else heard about this kind of problem? I can't imagine how you guys with a 422 block would feel having this happen and trash the block

Which dealership was this? W.P.B., Lauderdale, or Miami? I'd like to investigate this further. There might be a loophole in getting GM to create a fix . . . at least I can have my lawyer give it a looksee

I had my starter break off once. but I think it may have had something to with the rod that came through the side of the block and smacked into it

I hear ya - I had a starter break off a '67 Cougar 302; the culprit was a driveress couldn't control her Caravan in the parking lot and T-boned my car. Must have been going pretty fast. Unfortunately, she was uninjured and of course blamed everything and everyone except for herself... Bummer coming back to your car in the parking lot and seeing THAT!

when I had my clutch replaced last year, the mechanic told me my starter bracket was broken

He said he just used some JB Weld on it, and it's worked fine ever since, but neither of us had any idea how it would have broke, being that it is up inderneath the engine.

I don't see it as a big issue. LS1s have been out for a while now without a major string of these happening that I've heard of. I'd be more worried about the stock oil pumps to be honest.

Could have been a weak run of block material maybe???

bound to be the same cause as early SBC....don't hit the starter while it's running fella!!

Atleast they only used to break the starter cone!

Well.. my starter took a LARGE hit a few months back (had a flexplate come apart). The hit(s) were good enough that they broke one of the starter mounting tabs clean off along with large portions of the engaging gear nose assembly. My block was no worst for wear.
