How much "Slop" in your timing chain?

I'm in the process of installing a new cam and when I removed my timing cover I was surprised to see that the timing chain has about .350 - .400 play side-to-side. Is this normal? Do I need a new chain?
I'm installing a Comp Cams 216/220 with 26918 springs. I guess this is why Comp Cams grinds in 4 degrees of advance in order to compensate for the retarded sloppy chain.
Thanks for your help,
John

I've heard the GM also grinds 4 degrees of advance in for the same reason. Those chains are loose new, but thats the way GM had Cloyes make them...

I wonder if the CompCams adjustable timing chain set will get as sloppy as the factory OEM chain set after a few miles?
