Cutout placed behind axle? Good idea?

I was thinking about doing this. Puting the cutout on the back side of the axle where the tubing bends into the muffler. Do you guys think this is a good idea? The exhaust would flow right out the back instead of the middle. What do you guys think? Would it produce the same power as a cutout placed right before the axle?

Is it a good idea? Sure it is, it cuts down on the interior noise dramatically vs a cutout before the axle. Check out my dyno page for my results.

Bugblndr, any pics of it? I know i have seen some on the net somewhere but cant find any pics of over the axle cutouts. And yes, interior resonance is one of the big reasons i would do this.

I have a ZED style cutout behind the axle, just before the B&B muffler. My muffler guy cut into the pipe and welded on a stub of 3" with a flange and cap. Then he made me a 3" extension pipe with a flange. On the street I keep the cutout closed, but on track I open it and bolt on the extension. So then I have three pipes. Anyway, with the cutout open, at idle, a fairly significant amount of exhaust still flows through the muffler and exits from both muffler pipes although most comes out the cutout.

Mine is after the axle, less noise, and good power!

Back in 1998, we had this thing called the 'Poor Man's Borla mod' for 98 SS's with the single cannon exhaust. I bought a tip from a guy and added a cutout type exit and a tip... That exhaust and a lid picked up 13rwhp for me. Sounds like a Borla for a lot less.

The over axle cut out worked really well for me. It was loud, but it didn't vibrate the interior. Here's another picture.

Thanks! I can't remember any increase at the track. Sorry.

Brandon - That looks like one of Nick's famous cutouts. I have one exactly like it.
I like having the cutout at the back a LOT more than under the car. It's a ton easier to get to, and it's NOWHERE near as loud inside the car. I use wingnuts to cap it up, so it takes all of 15 seconds to open it up. I've track-tested the cutout 3 times vs. running through my SLP dual/dual, and I saw no improvement in ET or MPH. That will all change later on after I swap out the heads and cam, but for a stock-internal LS1 the dual/dual is plenty. As for you guys with stock catbacks, the cutout should show an easy .1+ at the track.

Brandon, can you see your cutout from behind your car? I am just curious as to what it will look like on my formula. I will be using it with a hooker cat back.
and thanx for all the replys guys!

Yup! Mine was actually the first he had done after the axle. It took forever for me to explain what I wanted.

I made my own cut out also, my car is lowered 1" so you really can't notice it from behind unless you get on the ground and look up. I dyno'd with it open and closed but only showed gains between 3 and 5 rwhp, seems like the normal dyno tolerance could come into play though. I do love the way it sounds, I run it open all the time. The cabin noise is much better with it over the rear end (I used to unhook it @ the intermediate pipe). Here is a pic, I hope this works.
