I think it would be cheaper and faster to just build a 400sbc based 434 solid roller 18 degree motor. More fun to

I agree with you. LT1's, Ford's, old sbc all can sound mean as hell. But it's not a distinctive sound. The LS1 is. If someone knows their shi%, they can tell a car is an LS1 just by the sound. That sound says all alumimun, 6 bolt main, 310 crank hp (hehe, sure), 10.1 compression from the factory. I don't want people hearing my TA and wondering if it's a LT1. Most non LS1 owners won't admit it, but when they hear an LS1 it causes instant respect. This was told to me by a fox body guy. To someone who is not into muscle I could care less what they think, because they probably don't care what it is anyway.

My house is located off a busy 6 lane street and people rip by my house all the time with 5.0s, 4.6s, LS1s, you name it. I can easily tell them apart, and the one thing the LS1 does have over the others is a real exotic car type sound. If you've ever heard a Ferrari at full song, the LS1 sounds similar to that. So even if it might not sound as tough as a Flowmaster'd 5.0 or an LT1, it does sound more expensive.

Most of an engine's exhaust sound has to do with how complete combustion is when the exhaust valve is opened. The LS1 is very efficient and thus somewhat quieter than other cars with the same power. The bigger the cams get the meaner they sound as the exhaust get's opened earlier and earlier and remember most of you guys are running smaller cams not larger ones. The louder sound is from the explosion still burning as the exhaust valve opens. Of course the tone and "deepness" and all that is related to the overall exhaust system as well as the mufflers etc. The firing order has some effect as well but not as much as most people think. ALL american V8s fire every 90 degrees evenly spaced. The LS1s Ford based firing order is just better for the crank and thus vibration for the most part.

Mike, you haven’t heard Jake’s car yet
Pete’s car sounds great, no question about it. But I’ve been listening to both Pete’s and Jake’s cars for quite a long time and I don’t think that Pete’s LT1 sounds any better than Jake’s LS1.
Mike, not to sound like a smart *** here, but don’t judge Jake’s car till you hear it. I think you’ll be surprised. When idling next to each other Jake’s car clearly has a deeper tone. Trust me, I’ve been hearing both these cars at Photo’s for so many Saturday’s now that it’s not even funny

Fair enough and I won't argue with you on this. BUT, like I said before, I've heard plenty of both kind of motor's, and the LT1 has always sounded better to me than the LS1 so I don't think Jake's car will change my mind any! It was already made up a long time ago. To each their own.
Good luck with your new 2OTL.
Mike

somewhat biased, but I've never heard a better sound than my 396 LT1 w/GTP heads, GTP-6 cam, hookers, !cats, and 2OTL. I'd love to have that 2OTL sound again, but my LM doesn't come close. I'm wondering what SLP's new dual/dual sounds like...close?

I think he's saying that the sound you get from an LT1 with those mods he listed sounds like a cross between a beefy Nascar engine and a high pitched european engine.

I had a 93 Formula with the Flowmaster exhaust on it. Made my LS1 sound like a v-6...
