I got my SLP 160 T-stat today but there were no "detailed instructions which makes installation a breeze" included like they said. So, do I just unbolt the old one, then remove the hose. Put the hose on the new one, and bolt it up? Please say its that easy. hehe.

It's that easy!!!

Except remove the line first, then unbolt old one.
Install new one, then install line.

Great, how much coolant will come out of the hose? If its alot, I'll make sure to have a friend there and he can hold it up.

A good amount will come out. Get a drip pan under it. A friend nearby never hurts either!!

Here's a hint..

First of all, open the coolant cap to let out pressure, then put it back on before starting. This allows a minor vacuum to develop which helps a little to reduce coolant loss.

Next, don't take the hose off the thermostat yet, just pull the clamp back.

Now, swap the stats. Since very little will come out of the hose since the stat is still connected, you can just deal with the motor side. If you hold the stat in place while you take the bolts out, you will lose very little fluid. Do a quick swap and you lose maybe a cup or so. Put the bolts in. Now just pop the hose off the stock stat and quick put it on the new one. Install clamp and you are done.

I've done this easily a dozen times this way, you should be able to do it without losing much more than 1/2 quart or so.

Just my .02 with what works for me.....

Easiest thing to do is drain some of the fluid out first then put it it back when you are done. <img src="graemlins/formula.gif" border="0" alt="[Pontiac]" />
