Default Cam Lift question for all the wise and experienced

I'm looking at a custom cam for my LS1 (WS6 if anyone cares). The cam duration I'm looking at is 224/224. The thing is, it comes from a variety of vendors that offer different lifts, for instance .561, .563, .581...how much lift can one get without modifying the piston tops? And how important is more lift?

Thank you for your input and consideration.
