GM high-flow oil pump 17801830 vs. LS4? Help, is 17801830 just an LS6 pump?
LS4 is on backorder... SDPC recommended 17801830... is it truly a high flow oil pump or is it just an LS6?
I want the LS4 because I'm running a Dewitts oil cooler and track the car.

Ok... just spoke w/ Gene Cully @ GMpartshouse.com and he verified that 17801830 is not an LS6 pump it is indeed a GM highflow pump. Also, verified that GM has no LS4 pumps.
Fark... wish somone knew if 17801830 was as good or better than the LS4.
I'm running a dewitts oil cooler and track the car so I'd like a little more pressure.

LS4 is for the displacement on demand motors which need a high volume pump. A higher volume pump will flow more oil than a ported and shimmed LS6 pump, the actual internal gerotor is different.
I'm running a 7 plate oil cooler and I run HPDEs in the car so I could use the extra pressure.
However, if you car is a drag car or a street car w/o an oil cooler then you don't need one.
The melling is great, but $130ish.... I got my LS4 for $65.

Half of the info on the web claims kit includes a "high volume" pump and the other half claims it's simply a stock LS6/LS2 pump.

17801830 is an assembly which contains two items.
1) "standard" oil pump p/n 12586665, which at one time was specifically the LS6 oil pump, and now is just the"normal" oil pump.
2) o-ring p/n 12557752
17801830 is NOT an oil pump, it is a kit which includes an oil pump and an o-ring.
If your oil cooler is running in series with the engine, I don't see how a high flow pump is going to be more beneficial than a standard volume pump. If they are in series (and they normally are) 100% of the oil flow going through the cooler is also going through the engine. You would be better off with a high pressure pump to deal with the pressure drop through the oil cooler.
Pressure is determined by the bypass valve spring, not the gerotor geometry. Any additional flow provided by the gerotor, above the bypass opening point, just dumps back into the oil pan.

If 12586665 is the standard LS6/LS2 pump that came factory installed on tens of thousands of engines, and 17801830 is a kit that includes that very same 12586665 pump, how does the "kit" magically become "high volume?"

The best I can do is research and come to my own conclusions.

for what its worth, when I put a LS6 pump in with my cam change, my oil pressure went up. Now this is is on a 50k mile great running motor. I get 60psi on the freeway hot and 45psi at hot idle with 5w-30 Mobil1. That's enough pressure for anything with normal bearing clearances. Probably too much.
