Default New Heads and Cam with Disappointment in HP

Acquired new G2 Heads, new cam, custom tunnig Dyno and LS6 intake on my 99SS auto. The work was done at LG Motorsports. After these additions my car dyno at 387 HP. I am disappointed because I was hoping for 400 to 410 HP. Before these mods, car dyno at 318 with: Lid, GMAF, MAFT, FLP's with SLP catback, ASP Pulley, and Hpertech Programmer. Above dyno of 387 HP was without MAFT. Is this HP for my car low, average or a liitle above average. I am disappointed somewhat because of the amount of money I spent for 69 or 70 HP. Will someone please comment on the HP rating and what other steps I could take to get a little more horsepower. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I wouldnt be disappointed. Like he said, its an auto. I would rather have a steady torque curve than a peaky HP curve any day. You will find that those are the cars that haul nutz at the track but simply dont dyno well.

Those are some good #'s...think if you had a ported TB and bigger MAF, and a crank pully with the right programming along with the MAFT....you could easily get above that mark....

Your initial dyno was pretty low. 318 with basically all bolt ons including FLPs? That's really low, should be more like at LEAST 330-340rwhp (maybe more, not sure).

Either your dyno just reports low, or maybe you're showing less RWHP because you're not locking your TC. Were your torque figures unusually high?

Judging from the fact that your initial dyno was so low, you'd probably make 400rwhp if you resolved whatever made the first dyno so low (actual car problem, dyno issue, etc).

Try another dyno maybe? What kind of trap speeds are you pulling? That's all that really counts, is the results at the track

Kent, your heads/cam #'s arent "that" bad, but I agree that they definately leave something to be desire. From seeing that VERY low bolt on #, I am thinking you may have other problems. 318 rwhp is very low for an LS1 running FULL bolt ons(headers, lid, pullies, etc...) How you ever had a leakdown check done on your block? You may be losing some power due to a possible bad ring.....These are just assumptions, so don't let them scare you .

Good luck...

I dynoed back in the day, 325rwhp and 340rwtq, and that was with FLP's, LM, and A lid.....through a 6-speed

I forget to mention that I have a 3200 vig converter with my setup. Does this reduce H P ratings on dyno's.

You just found the problem.

That vig will rob about 20hp, if not more.

Does the car have cats too?

Have you A-Tapped to see if your getting any KR? That also can rob HP.
That was one of my problems, along with the unlocked TC.

I did have a cutoff installed on the car but it was not opened for the dyno, will this improve the HP? Please advise.

Don't get too hung up on dyno numbers. I once turned 316 RWHP and ran 11.56@115.28. Low dyno #s? Big deal. Go to the track. Find out what's really up.

Now I run 9s. What are my dyno numbers? I have NO idea. They could be 475 or 575 for all I care. It's what happens at the track that counts. I would love to know that I outran a car that put down 600 RWHP. Or, on the otherhand, if I get beat it wouldn't make me feel one bit better if I were to find that the victorious car only dynoed 400 RWHP.

The track is where it's at!

Those dyno numbers look pretty good to me.

I only dynoed 382.9 with the exhaust on. Not quite 400 with the headers uncapped and a little tuning.

Yes... your converter is eating some HP. I kept reading your post trying to find out if you had a converter, once I saw it. BINGO! I would not be ashamed at all of those numbers.
I giggle a bit when I see some folks post HUGE dyno numbers and then have some weak nut E.T. to back them up.
Or they post those BIG numbers and ten cant back them up at another dyno.
Dyno queens suck. "What? how can you beat me, I dyno'd 450rwhp, and you did not even make 400. Your cheating!"

Dynos are for tuning. As long as I can get a baseline number and then increase that number when I drive off the dyno after tuning the car. I'm happy. But final dyno "bench racing" numbers are for "green horn" newbies that are easily impressed with inflated dyno numbers.

E.T.'s are the only numbers that mean squat.

Dyno shmyno.......dyno numbers, who really gives a rats ***? "Newbies" that's who.

BTW, why are you using a MAFT when you have custom tuning?

I was just about to say, that with every bolt on available, I only dynoed 300 hp/ 302 tq, this was just before getting the 11.49. Now I see why I was so down, the converter. I knew it dropped it, so I just never got caught up in the dyno ##, as long as I'm going faster. It would be nice to know I have 400 hp, but even better to get that 10 sec time slip.
Get a lock up switch, if you want to see what you really are making, then dyno again.

I agree with the Colonel, Raughhammer, BlackSunshine.

I just did heads/cam/intake/pulley and my car is running EXTREMELY rich and I only dyno'd at 315rwhp and 345rwtq! But my test pass at th track last Sat was a 12.10@113 w/ 1.68 60'.

My ET and 60' was awesome for my power. Just forget the fact that I have heads/cam since there is no tuning right now, its the low power but decent ET that counts.

Retry with a stock MAF. I have seen GMAFs eat 20RWHP on the dyno.
Did you wideband at the same time?
Cheers,
Chris
