Default SC vs H/C

i've seen the post somewhere so perhaps someone can reference the link. Q: pros and cons btwn these two? i could install the SC myself after i spend approx $4.5k, do it on a weekend, and save myself the labor expense of having someone else doing it. the H/C plus install will run a few k's more but will seemingly fall short in rwhp vs the SC. my car only has a catback system and is otherwise bone stock. i definitely want the extra pwr and i am not in it to race all the time--except for a couple of runs down the 1/4 to see what i've got. i had the good fortune of meeting a local who spent alittle over $7k only to punch out 405 rwhp! for quite a bit less i'll venture to say i'd punch out 425-440 rwhp. any takers? thanks.

Of course you can get more horsepower out of the SC.. Engine wear would increase.. More maintenance with the supercharger I would think and if you have to do something to the engine you have just that much to take off in a already tight space.. Recently they have been perfecting FI cars and they are running better, but it is cool just to say I am NA and I run well..

I like the idea of running na, but with the factory warranty a supercharger is something that can be more easily removed and covered up than a head and cam swap. Ive been tossing arround what I want to do for 2 years and the SC seems to be winning out. There are wear, tear and tuning issues specific to both of them you just cant say one is better than the other in all areas. If you decide to go back to stock you can do it yourself with the sc,(I assume you dont want to do engine work yourself), you would have to pay to get the work undone with the heads and cam setup.

H&C.

First off you'll want headers and a high flow exhaust for both, so let's leave that out.

In SoCal you're going to have to deal with lower octane gas and the extra heat generated by a S/C.

You can get a good set of ported heads and a emissions friendly cam and put down about as much power as you can use running street tires. Besides you can be either stealth with a smooth, quiet idle or lope to show off. A S/C is going to whine all the time.

A good heads & Cam package installed should run less than $5k with tuning.

Sure you'll be putting out more RWHP with a S/C, but look at all the people running a S/C, they are running the same times as people with h/c. So yes if you never take it to the track and are a dyno queen then get the S/C. Plus look in that forum, there are a lot of posts that start out "Help....my supercharger/turbo isn't running right!!" Sure you get that with h/c but for raw power and simplicity I would go with h/c hands down

I was all about NA power... - till we put a blower on a friends LS1. Now I’m torn between the two as well. Sure, there are tuning issues to deal with either way, but I will go out on a limb here and say that you are less likely to blow stuff up engine wise with H/C than with a blower.

For now, I’m just doing a cam (B1) and I’ll either do heads or a blower later. First I’m going to do an intake though. I don’t have headers yet either, but that’s because I’m just not totally happy with any of them on the market right now.

All I have to say is, after seeing a couple setups I wouldn’t ever consider any blower kit for an LS1 other than ATI, but that’s just my opinion...

BTW, it took two of us about 7 hours to install the ATI kit. We had never done one before. We used only simple hand tools.

thanks for the feedback. ATI would definitely be the SC choice for me--in particular the P1SC1 which apparently works well with stock programming. i have since purchased a set of headers and will be installing them this coming weekend. i did also consider the heat but i am from a costal community so it's a few deg's cooler vs being inland. occassionally i do those to-and-from drives btwn major cities so that's really about the only added heat the car could be exposed to. as far as the SC whine, i dont think it's nearly as audible as vortec. i think i would compare it (at idle and possibly up to mid rpm) to saleens SC. i think it's the upgrade D1 that's really audible. hopefully the headers and exhaust will mask the SC until i punch it! i cant wait! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[Burnout]" />
