how can i remove the main seal?

how can i remove the main seal? how on earth can i remove the front and the rear main seals!! i have both covers off the motor and i just couldn't get the seals off!!( i tried hammering on them with a screwdriver)
any suggestions?? and if i ever get them off, whats the proper way to put the new ones on???
