How do I know if my valvespring is broken?
Recently I messed up my car when accelerating. I got a check engine light and the car was almost stallng out. I also heard a noise under the hood, not really a ticking noise. I checked the driver side valveterrain and the pushrods were not bent, rocker arms look fine and the spark plugs looked good to. The springs look good but how do you know if they are okey? I cant really see the inner spring good enough? I have yet to check the passenger side because of the rear bold on the coil cover. Also do I need new gaskets for the valve covers?

Ws6Modder and I just changed the springs on his yesterday. He had 941's and broke #6. We put on new 918's and they seem good so far.
If you can get an Auto-tap, you should be able to see misfires on the cylinder with the broken spring.
Even if the spring looks good, see if you can twist the spring around underneath the rocker arm. If you can, its bad. His springs looked good at first, but in the minimal light available its hard to tell unless there are pieces laying in the valley.
You should be able to reuse your valve cover gaskets.
Just some thoughts,

The only way I know to get the last bolt off of the passenger side coil packs is to use the smallest 10MM wrench you have. It just takes time and you don't need to put it back in when you reassemble.

The inner spring doesn't matter. It's just a damper to reduce the harmonics from the actual valve spring.
If the car is running like crap at idle, then generally, if it's due to a broken valve spring, then it will be broken enough to see it. It runs like crap because the valve is not closing all the way due to the reduced height of the broken spring.
