all you guys asking about the manners of different cams
Crowley, opinions will vary. My car was my only vehicle for three years, so I was always particular about not having bad street manners or loud exhausts. Personally, I like cars to run very strong, very quiet, and very reliable.
I drove that T1 cammed 346ci motor for over a year (22K miles) and to be honest, I wouldn't have been any happier with a bigger cam. Its drivability (for me) was borderline for what I'd consider for a daily driver. Listed for yourself how this "small" 221 cam sounded:
Idle thru a very quiet SLP dual-dual catback
Idle thru a loud 3" exhaust cutout
As you can see, even a 221 cam lopes pretty damn hard in 346ci. The "sound" will vary with exhaust loudness, but drivability is more dependent on idle rpm. I do NOT like 900 rpm idle speeds to compensate for larger cams. Not with all the stop-n-go traffic I had to sit in daily (over an hour per day).
Now that my Formula is no longer my daily-driver, I am going with a big 244/244 cam with my 432ci motor being built

My MMS 229v2.1 idles nice at 900rpm (pulls 15.5" of vacuum out of gear), doesn't stall, and makes great power. It's all in the custom tuning.
Here's the deal...and I'll put this as plainly as I can to avoid blanket statement. I, for one, trust that ANYONE going into their motor should have done the research before hand, and trust that any member would not just go on what people say on the internet. I feel our members are smarter than that.
As for the blanket statement. I was actually gearing my discussion (isn’t that what we call arguments based on automobiles on the net?) towards all the members asking different questions about different cams as far as idle and tune and power. Unless you put in that ***** Crane cam you will gain some power somewhere. (READ the words, right Brooke and John?) I’m not implying that you will gain power or torque where you want or when you want...just that the numbers will go up and I'm sure you'll feeeeeel the difference.
John Campbell. Please refrain from entering this discussion with any drivability statements or opinions on your cam, since they will change at a date yet to be determined. I’m sure you are a GREAT guy and I TOTALLY RESPECT you, your car, and your driving...but it seems you are a bit headstrong in your views when it comes to your car. "The 221-222 is perfect....wait...224 is ok." "Vig rules...not Yank." Keep in mind I’m paraphrasing with what I remember from different posts, and I’m sure you or any member can attest that I am quite unbiased to one setup vs. another or one person against another, so please don’t take any of these comments as flames or attacks. As I said, I respect you. And yes, to EVERY respect I take all statements on the internet "with a grain of salt."
I think most people (hopefully) understand where I’m going with this. If you (the cam owner) picks a cam that, to you, sounds good...do it. Who's to say what you like, or what you want. You can be a sheep, for lack of a better word, or do like some and try new things. Now, don’t take the sheep comment as flame either as some guys simple GO WITH WHAT WORKS. Good for some, not for others. To each his own.
So, back to my statement of the day. I’ve been around my fair share of different cams and cars. Old School to new school. What I’m saying is...if you install the cam correctly, get the correct amount of programming/tuning, and let the computer learn in the subsequent days following the install, you will not have any additional issues with a larger cam vs. the smaller or 'medium' sized cams. This is of course excluding issues such as P to V clearance as this SHOULD BE CHECKED when going that large. Do your homework (OF COURSE, why would you believe some stuff you read on the internet versus an actually vendor or sponsor conversation), pick the cam YOU want, and be happy. All cams will stumble, a lot will stall. That's part of having an aftermarket cam in your car. The root cause for me starting this thread is listening to the audio/video clips online right now in this forum, and laughing be cause of the smooth sound. Not to mention the numerous cams/cars I've been in, driven, or had the opportunity to listen to.
I gotta give a shoutout to TA_2001 (Terry I think) in Plano with the Hotcam...who, by the way likes his Hotcam/stock program car even though many people think the cam is crap. And a thumbs up for Terry for moving to a larger cam and seeing the gain he predicted (for the most part) and having nearly the same idle with that INSANELY HUGE (sarcasm) camshaft. And for Fireball for running the B1 and MMS229 with an 800rpm for at least a few days.....
And as far as the G5 cam goes. I cannot speak for JW's tuning but to the best of my knowledge, his idle is set to 950 and Lou's Vette (now 346cid, what I listened to on Sunday) isn’t far from that. I would be willing to bet the highest it would be is 950-1000 due to a shop you know and love doing the tuning for the stroker it used to have. If I heard right...someone at LG told me it was 900rpm but they didn’t say the nature of the PCM or whether it was the same or not. It was tame IMO. Nothing like the old school cars I grew up around. And FWIW Louis ran the same cam with heads with the stock M6 idle speed. Granted he had some issues with cold start, but I believe the magical T1 has is issues with that as well. But again, we are not talking about that. Maybe I’m just plain wrong...who cares...read another post...we have 100,000 to chose from. All this (as well as others) should always be taken with a grain of salt fella's.

Believe it or not, I actually love it when experienced people "argue" because it really teaches alot to us people who have never changed out a cam! Thanks for all the help!
