all you guys asking about the manners of different cams
NONE of these cams (B1, T1, TR224, et al) are radical to me at all. i mean, you can tell there's a cam in there....but they are by NO means too lopey or radical. i heard the G5 with no mufflers and it was tame (idle was at 900). i say go big if you want to, dont worry about what people say...would you rather get a 221 then switch later...or scare people when you drive up? Power will be there with any cam. get what you want.

Damn, just think all the time I wasted on researching cam selections when I could have just slapped any ole cam in there

perhaps you should familiarize yourself with the statement "with a grain of salt." SURELY not EVERY cam on earth will make the same power, but i am speaking of cams carried by sponsors and other shops alike. you really think the shops listed to the right of your screen would sell you a piece of ****? granted opinions will vary. ive heard GM cams, MTI cams, TR cams, LG cams, etc. all sould GREAT! but if YOU (the owner) dont take into consideration that the cam will change the characteristics of your car...then you will be dissapointed. 224? 230? 226? who cares...there WILL be a performance increase. im just saying that if you want to go with the crowd...do so. if not, do what you want.
and who the hell said bigger cam makes bigger power. i just said any aftermarket cam (AND USE COMMON SENSE HERE!) will add performance.
i just dont like to talk down to people like im better than they are, John. i would like people to be diverse and do what they want.
hope you see this before it gets deleted. oh wait...this isnt your section anymore.

Dude when you make blanket statements like "Power will be there with any cam" folks are going to call you on it.
Brooke took you to task for what you said, not what you implied. How was he to know folks should read what you post "with a grain of salt"?

Dang Terry, 400 bucks is a lot of money to me and a lot of other folks on this board.
I would much rather get the cam choice pretty close the first time then have to keep going back into the motor. Some times you do what you gotta do though.
For folks like you/me that do a lot of cam swaps, it is not as big a deal as the high school kid who has never been in a motor in his life and the 400 bucks your talking about is a weeks pay.
Big cams kick *** in the right combo.

I think emissions requirements are the biggest factor IMO.
My 226/234 only idles marginally worse than my B1 yet makes a ton more power. However it will not likely pass emissions. Is the extra 10-15RWHP over the B1 worth the possible fail on the emissions test?
That is the question that needs to be addressed IMO
If you are planning custom tuning and a double spring there is no reason in the world not to run a larger cam in the 226 to 230 range in duration. Especially with the new lobe designs that actually idle a lot better than some of the older style cams.
Cheers,
Chris

$400 is a lot of money to some. There are a lot of people out there that have to pay for installs as well, so swap is not as easy for them as it us for us. Cam selection is an very important part in a setup.
If people are just looking for "some" increase with a cam change and "how it sounds" is an important factor, then why pay more money for a cam from one of the sponsers when they could go with a Hot cam and get mean lope with mediocre increase in power for a good bit less money?
I know that we have a diverse group at this site, where some care more apperance and sound, and others that care more about getting the absolute most performance out of their setups, soemthat have a "Skys the limit" budget and others that are looking to get "the most for the least". The point being that the information must be available for someone to make a choice. Otherwise we would all be shooting in the dark, wasting a good bit of money and time. Personally I prefer to try and get it right the first time, mostly I hate pulling that damn crank pulley off over and over . Someone needs to hurry up and come out with a 2 piece timing cover for the LS1.

Ryan, you should know that the phrase "Bigger is Better" does not apply to camshafts. Also, your thread can be read two different ways. Raughammer took your post as a flame starter, I saw it another way. You are not clear enough with your intentions.
I agree that people should do what they want. No problem there. BUT, as an experienced member here, the newer members look for advice from us, especially as staff members. Simply saying "do what you want" isn't helpful at all.
In my opinion, cams between 221 to 224 intake duration are the best for performance without sacrifice in drivability. Raising the idle rpm up to sky-high levels over 900+ like some guys do to handle big cams won't cut it for me, and many others that still drive these cars daily.
I've also heard and dynoed a ton of cams, and you can definitely hear the difference between a 221 cam and a 229 cam that are set at the same idle rpm. BIG difference in a 346ci motor. To say they are similar is total bs. If they were similar, nobody would be drilling out their tb holes or raising rpm at idle to compensate. Do not confuse rpm smoothness with idle rpm. ANY combo can run smooth at a higher rpm.
So, lets get back to helping people with our experience please.

Raughammer ,
I agree with you that some will take the moderators word and go for it. So some caution should be use when making blanket statements. Also to some $400 is a weeks pay and that is a lot to most.
You know I think this is why the people who set up this board uses more than one person as a moderator. You guys kind of balance out each other and when all opinions are taken in a very balanced and informed decision can be made by the board member.

Chris, I think as more and more people see that you CAN run a little bigger cam that last year because of the new lobe ramps and such that you will see more folks stepping up a bit over the tried and true 221~224 cams.
With the new XE-R cams and XE cams, the cam idles like a much smaller cam of two years ago but make power like a big cam when spun up.
1maddSS, Man, wouldnt that be sweet, an LS1 two peice timing cover? I would buy one.

Now, if I didn't give a damn about drivability issues, sure I'd say go wild on the cam specs, gearing, converter, etc...

First of all, well thanks!
And no, I am running the new C2 cam.
After some head porting work and changing my goals to a 10.5 E.T.(which it looks like i wont reach this year) I swapped to the C2.
I was looking for a little more lift to compliment my heads and a little more duration to raise my power band up just a bit.
All in all i am pretty happy with the new cam. The Hammer would have gotten me very close to where I am at though. (IMO)

Coooper.. I man from my own neigborhood..
I wanted to add that the characteristics
that a person want will vary. I dont want
to raise my rev-limit and that is why I have
the hotcam. Some have A4 and dont want to mess
with idle problems. Some want the old man cams,
like trooper had..
I dont think its fair to suggest " put anything in"
There will be some young buck out there that is
excited and has few dollars to spare; put in a wild cam with stock springs and crater a motor.
I belive that many read here hoping to learn something and get some sound advice.
There are many things to consider when picking
out a cam for your ls1.
