Default What shims to use with the 918 springs?

Can I just install these springs with the stock shims, or is there a critical way to shim these springs?

Thanks,
Ken

They are designed to be used with stock retainers and seats, i am installing #915 on a set of ls1 heads and they are checking a little low on pressure, so i would check installed heights of valves, and then see what spring pressures are at that installed height. If you dont have a spring testing tool have machine shop check them, this would be important if spring your using is only just enough for the cam and rpm your going to use.I have found many springs check lower pressure than they are rated at, many times it is still tolerable, depends what you are doing.

what shims are you goin to use with the 918's? i am gettin ready to order a cam with those springs and a buddy told me that when we install it we'll check the spring installed height and if it was off then we would use shims to correct it. Also, what is the usual installed height of the 918's?

Checking height for spring is 1.800", you can probably get shims from Comp, Isky or Crane. I dont have size right now but i'll measure later.

Ken,
I am using 918's on a set of stock LS1 heads and have had no trouble at all with valve float. We used the stock shims. What cam are you going with?

is there a preferred tool that i should get to check installed spring height? ive tried to look for diff. ones, but all i ever find is a small telescoping one that u install in place of the spring and then measure height. basically its this: micrometer

Extra spring pressure(if not needed) only wears guides and valve job out, doesnt help power, and can make valvetrain noisier. none one of these are good things.

I guess you can use those style if you measure register thickness on mike, and subtract that # from readings on mike itself.I would get #4929 it should have more usefullness than the other.

I'm going to be using the MMS 224 V2 cam.

I have a set of 2002 Zo6 springs but I was told they will not handle the fast ramps of the 224

I called MMS they qiouted me 380.00 for a set of springs, retainers and shim kit.

If I can use the stock shims I will do it.

I'll just buy the retainers and the 918s and be happy.

WDYT?

Ken, i will just tell you what im doing and you decide.I'm using 918 springs with stock retainers and seats, the retainers are light and steel(strong).I wont spend money on titanium at this spring pressure and rpm range.I do reccomend good pushrods though, BTW i am installing MMS 229 cam soon.

Why mess with the 915s? There really is no reason to not use the 918s considering the effort it takes to swap them out.
