Default How often do they really fail? Rod bolts

I've got a 98 Formula. I'm putting a ms4 cam and prc 1.5 heads on. I am going to build a 408 next year(2008) so I don't want to put more money into this motor. With the ms4 i need to spin to at least 6500 rpm to get into the powerband. I will be spraying this motor with a 125 shot. N2o will come on at 3000 off at 6000 with a progressive controller. It seems like a lot of effort to tear the rotating assy. apart for upgraded rod bolts. If I keep the spray off on the high rpm and don't spin past 6500rpm will this be reliable. Your thoughts.

Well, it's hard to say whether they'll hold on for you or not. But, I would say in general, they have a better chance of not failing than they do failing. It's not a given that the rod bolts fail in certain applications, but it is certainly a risk you have to take into consideration. If you don't want to put more money into this engine and you have a 408 on the way, then I don't see any reason to upgrading the bolts since you already have a backup planned.

I personally know a guy with a 98 TA who had a rod bolt break at the track at the 1000' and send piece's of his motor all over the track and put huge holes in his block
So when it was time for the cam swap and alot of other stuff we pulled the motor and did the rod bolts on my car. did not want to chance it!

i thought the MS4 shifted higher than that?

in either case, i don't wanna experiment with them so im pickin a G5X3 on a 110 LSA to bring the powerband down

motor failure is something I always have in the back of my mind with as much mileage as I have. I know the MS4 like the RPM's but I make pretty good power throughout the RPM's with my cam. So unless I really need that extra edge in a race or at the track, I usally shift at 5800-6k, but never take it past 6700. I also worry about distorting the rod or slighty screwing up the install if I put rod bolts in at this point, then being worse off then I was.

Luckily for me the stroker fund is getting close to being complete
