Default tapping the crank threads

I posted yesterday about my crank snout threads being completely stripped. After comfirming this with a larger piece of 16mm threaded rod, my only alternative to replacing the crankshaft is to have the crank tapped for a larger bolt. A machine shop pro will have at it tomorrow morning. Any chance of this working?

From what I've gathered over the last 24 hours, I'd still have to cut new threads for the heli-coil. Then, I'd hope the epoxy it uses held up. The only advantage would be using the stock bolt. I've found a 3/4 " replacement bolt that will work if the threads are done well.

I think you'll be fine. evidently the crank snout is relatively soft metal to work with. It should except new threads pretty easily.

Bigger thread = Stronger thread

Just make sure you get the strongest bolt you can for the job. I think grade 8 is about as strong as they get.

Good luck

Grade 8 is the strongest you can get with a socket head. YOu can go stronger with the torx headed bolts. Just a little FYI. I had to do a lot of research on bolts a while back.

How many times did you put a pulley on that car of yours? You got me paranoid here.

Not sure If the LS1 crank is much different then most other small block chevys , But I bought a 70 SS Nova a few years back and a few days after having it the balancer and pulley just fell off , Lucky for me I wasn't getting on it at the time , The guy had jb welded the damn bolt into the crank !!! Anyway to make a long story short I just drilled out and tapped the crank and got a grade 8 bolt as wizkid stated , and locktited it down and it held awsome , I ran a 150 shot through that motor day in and day out , The guy that ended up with that car put that motor in a 68 camaro and sprayed the **** out of it with now problems , So I would say you shouldn't have any problems , Just be carefull if you do it your self !!!
