Default ??? on timing chain cover

I was noticing today that on Mark's engine that it appears from the factory there was a little bit of white sealant used at the corners where the timing chain cover meets the block and oil pan. Haven't noticed anyone say things about using a little dap of say RTV in the corners. Is this necessary???

BTW we are doing Heads, Cam, Intake and Oil Pump Swap.

TIA

Yes it is necessary. When you disassemble clean off the old white sealant. When you go to put the front cover back on place a strip of RTV at the corners. You will want to place about a 1/4" wide bead where the cover gasket end and oil pan meet. It will be about half an inch long. The front and back corners are the only places you will ever use RTV on this engine.

Again TIA for all your info. Andy

Which type (color) of RTV sealant is recommended?

I used a tube of blue Permatex on mine. I've never had a leak since my cam install... we used a tube of Mopar black RTV that I got for free from a buddy who's a mechanic at a Dodge dealer in the area. No leaks on his SS, either. I don't think it matters.

Like they said above, just dab some silicone where the oil pan and front/rear covers meet. I have used both the blue permatex and ultra copper with great luck.

Thanks for all the replies. We used some Felpro black RTV. The cam, timing chain, cover, oil pump, ASP pulley and water pump are back on.

Woo Hoo, moving in the right direction. Tomorrow should finish up, but unfortunately waiting for the TB to come back. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

Thanks again, you help is greatly appreciated.
