Default Metal sliver found on oil drain plug??

Ok, I've been hunting this tapping sound in my engine for over 2 weeks now, going deeper and deeper. I am down to just the shortblock in the car and havent found it. Now, I drained the oil last night to see if anything was in there that might give me a clue and I found this sliver of metal. It looks like a tightly curled sliver of metal is about the size and shape of the lead of a sharpened pencil. Its curled up real tight and you can see the sheared marks on it. Being stuck to the drain plug (magnetic) rules out a bearing. This sound I was hearing was no where near the intensity and depth of a rod knock. Is this just a coincedence? Maybe a piece of metal left on the cam I installed back in November (one oil change ago)? Once again, I am torn on whether to pull the motor or not. The picture sucks because the camera resolution isnt that great but it gives you an idea of the size in relation to the tweezers I am holding it with.

Is it magnetic?

Yeah, it was stuck to the magnetic drain plug as I said before.

I can't identify that piece of metal from the picture you posted, but since you're down to the shortblock already, just pull the motor and go through it. It's really simple to pull, especially with how far you have it stripped down right now.

Tightly coiled sliver of metal....

Sounds like threads that may have stripped or pulled out. Or from the factory. Know what I mean?

Do a search for AgaveCorvette I believe, he had a thread asking about it and had pics too. Could be the same thing.
