Default LS1 head gaskets marketed under NAPA

Well, I did some poking around trying to find a place to get head gaskets for a decent price since you have to buy the "kit" from GM. Victor Reinz makes the gaskets for GM and they also market these same exact gaskets under NAPA and Carquest. Carquest shows no record of this but I found the NAPA ones. They are only $12 each!! The part numbers are 5975 and 5976, R&L accordingly. You can order them from napaonline.com. I'm going to order one from a local NAPA store and see that its identical to the steel/lead style.

Long head bolt - 12560744 - $2.63 a piece (or $3.50 depending on your dealer)

Short head bolt (not sure which short one exactly) - 12558840 - $0.85 / $1.08 a piece.

I dont' have the other part number on me.

Absolutely perfect info and timing! I'm gonna need a set soon. And at $12 each, I'm not as worried about blowing them out versus a $150+ kit with extra gaskets I don't need!

I was reading through a new magazine and saw the add for Dana (Victor) gaskets and a lightbulb came onI knew their had to be a better way than the dealer The guy gave me the NAPA numbers...so they damn well better be correct. I did have the local NAPA guy check them and he showed it was for a 97-00 corvette.

Since napa lists them for 97-00 vettes I assume they are the older gaskets and not the multilayered ones, correct?

Thats correct. They are the lead/steel type...The type I want to install MLS gaskets are good for high cylinder pressures, but require very strict tolerances in the machining of the cylinder heads.

Ok, have we determined that these numbers are for the new style gaskets?

How bout the rest of us (me a 98). Does NAPA have a P/N for the old style lead type gasket?

I guess the jury is still out as to whether we can use the new style for sure on the early year LS1s

Confused,
Ron

Geez guys, should've known to come to NAPA in the first place , I'm a firm believer that NAPA has the best parts(not just saying that cause I work there).

Dean, I dont fly anymore unless it has 4 engines and I am riding in the back with a couple of Jack and Cokes!

Anyway, I dont think anyone here has yet to see what head gasket NAPA will give you if you order those 2 part numbers. Seems strange that one guy leaks coolant out of the heads with the "new improved" gaskets, and others say they have no problems with then whatsoever.....

Still confused...

Kimchee and Rice: You can use the new gaskets as long as your heads don't have the notches cut in them on the mating surfaces. I hear they also have to be 'really' flat.

Pep boys sells cheap gaskets too. The question is are these the same gaskets you will get at a dealership? Or a check ripoff?
