Default 400+ CI Iron block users info please

Im looking into building a big inch motor and would like to see what your combo's are. Im assuming the 6.0L block, What CI are you, what bore are you using, stroke, rod length, pistons, etc. Are we able to use the old SBC pistons since the bore could be 4.030? If you had to do it over again, would you use the iron block? This will be a daily driver with a good sized amount of nitrous. (200HP or so eventually) I know ARE does a lot of these, but I would like all YOUR opinions. Thanks.

4.060 bore
4.125 stroke
9.x:1 Compression (low to accomodate a SC)

With spray, I think the iron block is the way to go for a street driven vehicle. My 409 is as follows...

I'm going with:

4.0" stroke
4.035" bore
6.125" rod

Thanks,
Shane

Blackbird, I have parts of the system now i sold some stuff off a while ago. I have a Walbo 255 pump had 36 lb injuctors, and some other piddly stuff. Hope now to get a racetronix or aeromotive fuelsystem. Im getting the Turbo work done from Turbonetics or Precision Turbo and enging. Total Engine Airflow is building my motor for his project LS-1. Im going to try to get some aeromotive fuel rails to work on the intake. If all goes well it should be up and running soon. I had to get rid of the nitrous cause my car backfired on the dyno and cought the underneah of my car on fire and i dont want that to happen again. Justin

I would prolly do the standard 408 if I had an iron block unless I was stuck on getting the magical 427 or something.

The extra 10-20 cubic inches isnt really worth boring out the block that much IMO.

I agree, I bought a used block that was already bored or else mine would be a 408 as well.
Good luck

On all the 6.0 blocks we do the first thing is to sonic test! We sonic test every block that will see any kind of HP or be bored over 4.030. I remember in Johns case (4.060) he still had close if not over .100" after the over bore. We tested a few blocks that had less in some areas at the factorey bore (4.00")!!
Test the block, go for max. wall thickness (just clean it up .005-.010)if there will be alot of N20. The engine doesn't care If the N2O goes in a hole .030" smaller.
If you have it in the budget I would look at the aluminum re-sleeve for the weight reduction in the nose. We have been as if not more reliable at the high HP levels with the re-sleeve over the iron block (on the testing we have done). The 422 in our Camero (C5-R heads) has close to 70 passes in the mid to hight 8 sec. range with a re-sleeve @ 4.100 bore. The combo is 4.100 bore/ 4.00 stroke/ 6.125 rod and a dish piston. Not trying to push the aluminum block but weight in nose may be something to consider?

Nick I wanted so much to go Alum block, but there was not enough positive response about the re sleeve reliability. My car is a street car. My plan is to remove as much weight off the nose to get my cars current weight back after the iron block. My car will never see the track. Only street racing for me

I know before being comfortable with the re-sleeved engines we installed a few iron blocks in street cars and did have some complaints about the handling performance with the extra nose weight. We installed our K-frame and a few other weight ruduction things to make up the diff. but at the end of the day the re-sleeve is about the came price if not cheaper when taking these things into consideration.
I am 100% confident with our re-sleeves!

Wow this goes back a bit

I believe PSJ made 475RWHP unlocked after more tuning on that combo and a LS6 headswap.

I like the 4.035 x 4 inch stroke combo. Lots of room for serviceable overbores.
