Default is 38.5 degrees too much advanced timing?

i put my cam in and put instead of doing it dot to dot. i just put the new T1 cam where the old one was before because i had no way of turning the crankshaft over so i could find its dot. i put it exactly where the old one was though. i'm getting 38.5 degrees of timing and 0.0kr. thanks for the help

Are you SURE you're at WOT? 38.5 degrees of timing at WOT is WAY too much for an LS1! I also would not have installed the cam without putting the #1 cylinder at TDC. Lining up the dots is pretty common by most guys that install their cams, but even then, you still don't know exactly where the cam is installed. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable with the install. How did you get the crank pulley off? Why didn't you put the old crank bolt in and turn the engine over with a wrench?

That's real high at WOT. I don't recall anyone using over 31 degrees. My timing table gets up that high in the higher rpms, but under low load.

I'm pretty sure he has to be talking about NON-wot. I don't think you could get 38.5 degrees with absolutely no knock retard. I found that when I was hitting like 29-30 degrees (stock cam ported MAF, a lil lean) I would occassionally get 1-2 degrees of KR. However I (and I'm sure everyone else) see some crazy timing numbers at part throttle.

Lower rpm timing is like 35-42 degrees, but WOT for a stock car is like 27 degrees.

I currently run 31 degrees of timing at WOT.

When you do heads/cam, you might need to add timing down low to help driveability.
