If its an LS6 it shouldnt be failing, but yeah you would have to take the front cover off and drop the oil pan. The pan has to drop so you can unbolt the oil pump to oil pickup tube. Might as well just drop the motor. Its not too hard to drop it out the bottom.

How do you drop it out of bottom and do you have to polish the crank before you put ne bearings in?

You should polish the crank. There is a video on how to drop it out the bottom. Found it. http://www.bowlingss.com/DownLoads/Videos/
