Default LS6 crate motor exchange to 99 SS

I have a 1999 SS Camaro with 229,000 miles on it. I have only replaced the water pump and timing chain at about 210K miles. The suspension was redone as will and the car is still clean, so:

I'm about to go through the motor.

I can get a crate LS6 for $4800 - sweet deal. Issues I see is, the disclaimer stays ONLY smog leagal for Z06 vette. I also have an ERG, and it sounds like I will need to keep this. So, I guess I could modify the intake.

Question: will the LS6 run properly with EGR with PCM re-cal?
Will CA SMOG pass?

Just dont install your old EGR, they most likely wont know anyway since the 01-02's didnt have it anyway. Then delete the EGR codes out of the PCM so you can pass the OBD2 scan.

229k on the stock motor is a lot.

If you want to keep your EGR you will probably have to buy an SLP EGR-equipped LS6 manifold (about $450) - I haven't heard of anyone modifying the LS6 manifold for EGR (if it is even possible). You could also install a cheap, used LS1 manifold with EGR (I have one) but that would be a shame on an LS6 motor.

The LS6 motor will certainly pass CA emissions. Emissions legal for Z06 Vette only means that it was only certified for that car - not that it will not pass in another car.

I would have put an LS6 crate in my car when I genaded my LS1 a few years back but GM would not warranty it in a Camaro (GM crate motors have a 3-year/50k mile warranty) and my extended warranty company would not pay for it if it was not warrantied. It turns out it was good I had a warrantied LS1 because a cam lobe & lifter went bad 10k miles later and wrecked the motor with steel pieces.

I would talk to a a sponsor here about an engine before buying a crate motor. You could get a sb here for 3k or less and just swap your heads over. Or get some prc heads or just have TSP build you a long block. For 4800 you get a 408 Sb and then throw some bargain ls6 heads on it and have a real good combo.

Would a 408 pass cali smog? And would it run decent through the stock exhaust manifolds?

smog, yes. Wouldnt get the maximum out of it with stock manifolds but they'll work. Maybe shorties would be better. Talk to LME or TSP and see what they have to say about it. They'll give ya good advice on which way to go.

in CA.. you are allowed to put a newer engine in a older car so long as the engine was offered at one point for the same make & model.. such as the 2002.. some came with LS6 blocks.. and didnt have EGR.. all you need to do is make everything like the 2002 camaro engine.. including getting the EVAP and SMOG stickers placed in your engine bay.. you shouldnt need to take it to the smog ref.. but if you do.. it will pass very easily.

Ya - this motor just blows me away. My wife had it for the 1st 200K for out side sales and I changed the oil with Mobil 1.

I had the car on blocks for about a year taking my time on the suspension - came out nice. I changed the water pump and timing chain while I was at it. That's it

I called CA BOA Smog guys. They told me I could put the Corvette engine in my SS, and make an appointment with the refree. They would put a sticker under the hood once it passed.

I talked to a dyno guy who said he could blank the ECM code too. But I'm thinking - just run the EGR with the SLP intake and get the setup totaly dyno tuned. I would not need to deal with CA smog this way.

Good input, on checking with the sponsor of this page.
