Default Symptoms of rocker arm coming apart (valve train noise issue)

I haven’t drained the oil yet, but I’m noticing a ticking sound only under light load (in gear) from about 1500 to 2000 rpm. I get no tick above 2000, and I don’t get the tick at all when power braking the car in the 1500 to 2000 range, or revving it freely (in park) from 1500 to 2000. Also, as the motor warms, the ticking get quieter. I’ve been noticing this sound since the new cam went in. I have a B1 with MTI hardened push rods, 26918 springs with 772 ti retainers, and stock rockers.

Obviously, if I see needle bearings on the drain plug that will be the explanation, but until I have time to drain the oil (probably tomorrow) what else might this be? Is it just normal valvetrain noise that I’m not used to yet due to the springs?

Any of you who have had a rocker fall apart, what were your symptoms? Again, this noise is only from 1500rpm to 2000, and only under light load. I have not revved the new springs past 6300rpm yet, in case that matters. Thanks for any input.

hey, I had a rocker go bad. . .

When I changed the oil, for some odd reason I held the drain plug in place as the oil went past it, out the hole. . .the magnet caught EVERY SINGLE NEEDLE BEARING.

I had ZERO symptoms. Granted, only one side of the rocker lost the bearings. . . but I had no noise, or loss of power.

I too have a lot of noise after my cam install. I've drained the oil and nothing was unusual, and pulled both valve covers and everything looked ok there too. I think some cars are just noisier than others with the upgraded valvetrains.

Mine only ticks a little at idle, and the noise goes away when I rev it. I can sometimes hear it at 3000rpms when cruising, but it really is not that bad.

I've seen and heard other cammed cars in videos (on this site), and the valvetrains were just as noisy in their cars.

Jim, next time we've got both cars at Photo's we'll have to compare valvetrain noise! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
