Biggest cam for more power AND MILEAGE than stock?
Did a search but of course not too many posts about improving mileage.
I think it should be possible to build an LS1 that will make considerably more power and get better mileage than stock. Start with an '02 Corvette MM6 (like mine f'rinstance) and add the following:
AFR 205s milled to 64cc with Cometic .040 gaskets, SCR of about 11:1
American Racing 1 3/4" longtubes & high-flow cats
FAST 90/90
Underdrive pulley
Each of these items should either improve mileage or at least not harm it any, and between them should be worth 50-60 rwhp.
So now let's add a cam, with the design goal that it make good power and make at least as much mileage, if not more, than the stock cam with these parts. The cam also needs to have a very wide powerband, capable of running well at 1200 rpm in 6th, and also making good power to at least 6000. It also has to give good valve spring life.
I'm thinking something like a 220/220 XE-R on a 116+4. -12 degrees overlap at .050 should make good vacuum and mileage. IVC of 42 degrees at .050 should keep it making power well over 6000. DCR with above heads comes out at 8.65:1.
If anything, I'm thinking it might be better to go even shorter on the intake, say 214-216. The Crane 1.8 "fast rate" rockers w/guide plates on XE low-lift lobes seem like another good possibility.
I think this car could make well over 400 rwhp, run 11s, and get better than 30 mpg, maybe 35, at 75 mph.
Any other ideas on camming for these goals?

Mods hurt gas mileage, period. The more air through an engine the more fuel it needs, thats prett basic combustion. Now just upping compression will help out by making the engine more efficient without affecting airflow, but any airflow mod will have some affect on mileage.
I dont think you will ever keep stock mileage with a cam, unless its like lingenfelter cam.

Try the Thunder Racing CheaTR cam. I run it in my car and love it. Just .1 sec slower than when I was running the F13 cam. Drivability 110% better.

A couple years ago when I was using a G5x2 cam I did several long trips (5-7 hours) and was getting around 25 mpg. but that all changed as soon as I got off the highway and did some city style driving. Not sure on your driving habits but it seemed to get good mileage to me.
