Default Initial Impressions: TR224@112

Just finished up the cam swap last night and took it out for a brief test drive. Upon startup, I immediately noticed how smooth it idled. Gone was the nice lumpy lope of the Hot Cam. Backing it out of the garage I knew my neighbors were going to miss the rumble of the old cam. My neighbors are gearheads and love to hear my car. Putting it into 1st I noticed that it didn't quite have the torquey nature of the Hot Cam. Man, that Hot Cam put down a nice flat torque curve with the long tubes. The new cam needed a bit more throttle to get going down the road. I drove around the neighborhood in 1st and 2nd checking out the cam surge. It was not that noticeable, only around 1100 compared to the Hot Cam which would surge a bit under light throttle below 1400. Out on the open road I opened it up a bit to see how it wanted to rev. It doesn't have the guts of the Hot Cam but this cam loves to rev! Punching it in 2nd from just off idle it really came on strong above 4k and ripped the tires loose. I didn't want to get on it more than that because I just wanted to get the 918 valve springs up to full operating temperature for the first heat cycling. I drove it back into the garage and let it idle while I got out and listened to the exhaust note. Smooth, but just a hint of something more than stock, but not much. I know I won't get the queries that I used to get at stoplights with the Hot Cam, "Hey, what kinda cam you got in there?" I'm going to look forward exploring the full potential of this cam.

Using stock retainers. Fit like a glove.

Thanks for the post Brother J. I've been considering making the same change (from Hotcam to TR224) along with GTP heads. Based on your initial feeling it almost sounds like the Hotcam holds its own with the TR224 for street duty?

Hey Brother J,
Thanks for the E-mail, I would get A-Tap on it and get it on a WB dyno session to get back your old driveability that you were accustomed to, it just may be the FT programming is off a bit.
Good Luck with it!

Ironic thread. I just switched out my old Hot cam and 941 springs for the TR 224 (112 LSA) and 918s using stock retainers. Initial impressions were similar to yours; the Thunder cam seems a bit more tame (I'm gonna call it "refined") at idle. My shifter no longer shakes violently in my hand! Surging has dropped from what once was at an area under 1500RPM with the Hot cam now to a barely-noticeable surge at anything below 1100RPM. The exhaust note still tells the tale of a strong cam; I'm rather pleased with the sound. Driving impressions were similar to yours, but it seems as if I have more useable power from the TR 224 and it comes on strong as I pick the revs up. Below I'm posting my dyno sheets for both cams (using ARE Stage 1 heads and all of the bolt-ons):

HOT cam dyno

TR 224 cam dyno

This cam feels a bit stronger and definitely loves to rev.
