Default New Head Gasket, low compression?????

OK, just put the head back on, car is still not "together" and I'm trying to gauge whether I've got other problems....

My #5 cyl was showing compression less than 100, and the #7 wasn't looking too good either. Now, the #7 looks good (190-195) but #5 is hovering around 130-135...

Please bear with a stupid question here, I'm worrying...

does the car need to be run to operating temperature a few times for the head gasket to seal itself up, and therefore show an accurate compression, or am I looking at bigger problems than I first thought?

any idea what, besides rings, the problem could be??? I'm planning to do a leakdown test later this week, hopefully that will tell me more.

If compression stays low and I've got ring problems, I think I'll turn the car in early and buy a 2002.....

Head gasket should seal straight away. Have you retorqued them (in correct sequence) since having it fired up and running?
Also, do a leakdown, that should pin-point it.
Cheers

hasn't been running, only turned over (via the starter) to do the compression test.
gonna do a leakdown test tomorrow, am i right in assuming if the air is escaping through the exhaust or the intake then it's a head problem, and if i can hear through the oil fill then it's a cylinder problem???

I don’t know of your previous problems. I also don’t know what, you are trying to achieve.

Personally, I’d never bother to do any leak down or compression test on my engine, until I have run it for a while, to at least give it a chance to bed in and get some oil around the place.

In saying that, I did have cracked ring lands in my last engine. One minute it would go perfectly, next minute? ............ It would run like a bucket of ………

It could be in the valve seats. It could also be a course machining of your head face. Maybe your heads are warped, or perhaps you just put it together in a sand pit…..
Way to many variables.

Seeing as you have already spent the gaskets, perhaps you should just finish the job, run it and give it a try….. Good luck!!!

Edit... BTW I'm using the new gaskets with no problems.
