Im sorry, but over 400 for just the cam is rediculous to me. Maybe im just too old school, but I want a cam with the numbers that the Thunder Racing 224/224 puts out on a 112 LS. But, dont want to pay over $200 bucks. Any ideas ?

Wouldn't we all? You're not going to find a cam like that. Heck, I don't think you can get a Hotcam for that cheap. This is all part of the "we own Ls1s so we must get screwed" philosophy. Everything seems to be more expensive. Your best bet is to look for a used cam.

Although I agree the prices for our cars is a little ridiculous the cams are only a bit high.

A Gen 1 roller cost $260-300 at Jegs with like a gazillion potential customers. Now considering there is only a couple million LS1's a $100 more isn't that bad

You'll probably have to find a used cam somewhere. There is a hammer cam for sale in the classifieds for $325.

First of all what I'm about to say doesn't mean I agree with the pricing of LS1 parts... Far from it. But this is the third time I've been through this... First it was the L98... Prices for aftermarket parts were ridiculous. Then the LT1/LT4 came out... Again I get screwed on parts. This is nothing new. Its called supply and demand. Once this engine family has been in production say 8-10 years, prices will come down and stabilize.

Also, regardless of what we'd like to believe, there isn't a huge market for LS1 upgrades (in comparison to say Gen I and II SBC) so in the meantime, we will have to pay. Its the price of being on the cutting edge of technology.

I would like a McLaren F1, but the 1mil price is ridiculous. I will only bay 20,000.

Thanks,
Chris

I agree with you 100% Shane. If we decide to mod a new car prices will be high. Oh well...it's still fun.

Wow ChrisB, arent you witty. Guess what I was asking was if there were any other alternatives to paying a ballooned price for a cam, such as having someone custom grind one, or finding a cam from someone like Comp Cams, Luanti, Crane or the like, that is similar in lift and duration to the 224/224. So, exactly where in my original question did you see " please, someone post a smart a$$ remark" ???

most of the grinds sold by sponsors are made by comp or lunati sso you want get anything cheaper through them.

Your basically out of luck unless you find a really, really great deal on a used one though the average used price seems to be around the $300 mark.

Its all about recovering the cost of R&D and tooling.

Question, guess what the difference in cost is between getting one business card printed and 1000, pennies. Why? Your not paying for the cost of the paper, or ink, or even the machine. You're paying for the time it took to design and setup the printing machine for that card.

Same thing for aftermarket parts. Do you want to guess how much it would cost to make one custom grind cam from inception to completion?

I think the prices are like they are because of the cost of a blank core. I'm not sure where they get them from but I'm sure not alot of people make them. Its not like these cams will fit any other gm product made before. Maybe you can get your stock cam reground if you want to go that route. Would have to call some custom cam makers for something like that. maybe Cam Motions.

Dude..put the crack pipe down and step back...everything will be OK!

There's no way you will be able to find even a used cam for under $275. To havea custom cam ground you have to pay $500 for the prototype then another $400 for a producton cam.

Just buck up and take it like a man!

When are people going to figure out that a cast flat tappet hydraulic cam is ALWAYS going to be cheaper to produce than a billet steel hydraulic roller drilled camshaft?

I'm old-school too, and I think the price of these cams is just about right.

1) You gotta pay to play
2) $400 for that kind of power is the best value for your buck
3) $100 sbc cam is cast flat tappet
4) ls1 cam is hydraulic roller billet steel and gun drilled.

Life is choices, and you choose to be a CAB and stay slow.

The price has nothing to do with the particular TR lobe (other than thunders slight markup). The price has do to with a billet roller cam which requires different tooling than the old SBC. It's also supply and demand issue. Basic capitalism in play. Regardless of what you think a cam is worth the going price is going to be what cam makers think they can charge for it at a reasonable volume. The price of older cams is irrelevant.

No flames were intended, I think the analogy is actually pretty apt.

It really doesn't do any good to whine and moan about the prices - expecting parts to cost the same as an old SBC just isn't realistic.
