Is this true?
I live in Fairfax VA. Well when he told me 16 hours of labor i was shocked. I asked him what do u have to do? I said its simple as pulling the cam out and putting the new one in. He said no no, u have to take the whole top of the engine out to reach the cam. I told him i heard people do it in 4 hours max. He said well if i do that, nothing will hold the lifters and it might fall in the oil pan. He said if that happens then it will cost u more than 16 hours of labor because i have to take the engine up to reach the oil pan. I'm not that expert in taking a engine apart, but that sounded weird. Is it true that there is nothing holding the lifters from falling down when u take the cam out?

There are a couple ways to do it, naturally, there is the long way, and the short way. This man obviously makes his money by the hour and has chosen to do it the Ridiculously Long way.
There are methods, which he should know of , to suspend the lifter while changing out the cam with heads in place.
**** him, go to a different mechanic.

I cringe when I see all these install prices.. ouch.. I've done all the work myself and that's half the enjoyment of it. Although I understand not everyone has the tools and knowhow required. If you want some help and don't mind driving far, I'd help you put em in for nothing.

Calafornia, MD Is this Maryland state or CA state??
All you have to do to change the cam is:
-Remove valve covers
-Remove all rockers
-Remove pushrods
-Remove crank pulley
-Remove water pump
-May have to remove power steering
-Remove front cover
-Remove cam plate
-Rotate engine to TDC
-Remove timing chain
-Rotate camshaft about 4 turns to push all the lifters up (they will stay up on their own)
-Remove cam
-Repeat all above in reverse
Someone that know this can do it in 5-6 hours easy. Figure another 5-6 hours for headers (depending on experience and header type)
