Default Is this true?

How is $1100 for cam and headers installation? Is this a good price? How about $375 for the headers alone? The guy is saying it will take 16 hours to install the cam? Is this true? I thought it would take 4 hours the most? Help please.

I live in Fairfax VA. Well when he told me 16 hours of labor i was shocked. I asked him what do u have to do? I said its simple as pulling the cam out and putting the new one in. He said no no, u have to take the whole top of the engine out to reach the cam. I told him i heard people do it in 4 hours max. He said well if i do that, nothing will hold the lifters and it might fall in the oil pan. He said if that happens then it will cost u more than 16 hours of labor because i have to take the engine up to reach the oil pan. I'm not that expert in taking a engine apart, but that sounded weird. Is it true that there is nothing holding the lifters from falling down when u take the cam out?

There are methods, which he should know of <img border="0" alt="[judgement]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_judge.gif" /> , to suspend the lifter while changing out the cam with heads in place.

**** him, go to a different mechanic.

Seems like a lot to pay for someone to LEARN how to work on an LS1. Check out another mechanic or one of the board people close to you. Would be worth a couple a' hours drive to get it cheaper.

Here's another option for you- take it to Mikey at Rapid Motorsports in PA. He will do a headers and cam install for $650, and he can do it in one day. He installed a TR 220/220 cam, Grotyohann LT headers and y-pipe, BMR sway bars, timing chain, ARE oil pump, plugs and wires, and an Ed Wright programmed PCM in my car all in ONE DAY. I live in Southwest Virginia and it took me 9 hours to get up there- from Fairfax you could probably make it in 3 or 4 hours.

Dude he be smokin crack. I had black magic racing install my cam in 4 hours for a LOT cheaper rate than that. My cam and header install price was about half that. I as many people above have reccomended, go see a different mechanic. Or take a drive to NJ to SLP or up north to rapid and get it done a lot cheaper.

I cringe when I see all these install prices.. ouch.. I've done all the work myself and that's half the enjoyment of it. Although I understand not everyone has the tools and knowhow required. If you want some help and don't mind driving far, I'd help you put em in for nothing.

He's on crack...using only floor jacks and jack stands, I dropped my tranny, pulled my engine from the top, and had the crank on the way to the machine shop in under 6 hours, by myself!

All you have to do to change the cam is:

-Remove valve covers
-Remove all rockers
-Remove pushrods
-Remove crank pulley
-Remove water pump
-May have to remove power steering
-Remove front cover
-Remove cam plate
-Rotate engine to TDC
-Remove timing chain
-Rotate camshaft about 4 turns to push all the lifters up (they will stay up on their own)
-Remove cam
-Repeat all above in reverse

Someone that know this can do it in 5-6 hours easy. Figure another 5-6 hours for headers (depending on experience and header type)

I can see taking more than 4 hours if your changing valvesprings also, thats kind of a pain.
I think 6-8 hours is fair if you have done them before.
