Lately i've noticed my oil pressure dropping whenever I take off really hard in my 98 heads/cam Z28. Is this a sign of an oil pump giving up the ghost? It runs about 60psi on cold startup and settles at about 40psi at hot idle, but dropping it down a couple of hears and flooring it and it drops down to 40psi when it should be gaining pressure. Anyone know? Who sells a good ported oil pump for a good price and how hard is it to install?

Not sure if your problem is a sign of your oil pump about to fail or not...kinda sounds like it though. The usual sign is upon startup your gauge will read 0 for a few seconds or so and then your pressure will return to normal. Supposedly '98s have a high failure rate compared to other years, but so far my '98 has been just fine. However, I do plan on changing mine before the year is up when I do my cam swap. ARE and Katech both sell ported pumps. Katech is a bit cheaper though.

no, add 1/2 quart of oil over the full mark and you will be fine. ls1 have a prob with oil rushing to the rear of the motor. and the pick up can't scavage the oil. i have the same prob so does my girlfriends car. most cars pulling hard in first has that prob. most people don't notice it because they are holding on for dear life <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Still keeps about 40 psi or a hair under at hot idle, around 50 or so cruising. Been watching the oil gauge like a hawk since every week it seems like someone on here has one go out. Of course i'd hope an '01 with 12k miles wouldn't have a failing pump just yet.
