Re: Oil pump...is it worth it?
As the others have stated, its cheap insurance. When my oil pump started to go there were no warning signs or symptoms - just zero oil pressure one day on startup. In my case it could have been a fluke since the pressure came back after the second startup, but I wasn't about to take any chances.
Just think, the cost of a new pump isn't far off from the cost of towing your car home or to a shop. Since you're in there doing the cam anyway, its as simple as putting the new pump on instead of the old one. Its a no-brainer IMO when compared to the cost of potential repairs especially with your mileage.

Even with low miles it’s a good idea when you do a cam swap. Reason being, once you swap cams your warranty is shot to hell, and if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones that got a bad factory pump then you will be paying for a new motor. Better to pay the price of the pump then take chances with your motor, IMO. I got an ARE pump when my cam went in at 5300 miles

Re: Oil pump...is it worth it?
well....you convinced me. I just got off the phone with katech and the pump should be here in a few days. I figure with my luck, it WILL go out and like the booker man said, $110 for a pump is better than $1200 for a new block.
Now I just gotta save some $$$ for when my tranny blows...and once again..knowing my luck...it will.
Thanks!

I put in the katech one..it was cheaper but pretty sure its just a blueprinted stock pump..and think the are has more pressure..still katech said the pump works fine in their race cars..so not too worried..and that stuff about 7000rpm might be appropriate for road racing but doubt it for quartermile. My car might hit 6500 rpm for a second or so but not continuous over 6500 unless I roadraced it..and even then you would probably be keeping it in fifth or whatever.
The pump is a bit easier to do when you are doing your cam since you do have to take all that crap off anyway to get to it.Gm sure made it fun by putting that bolt in a very awkward place the one that holds the pickup..you have to drop the pan an inch to get to it..not fun but doable..just took a bunch more time.

Oil pump...is it worth it?
Im getting all the stuff together for my cam install. I've heard that the 98's (I have a 98 Z) are known for going out. Mine shows no problems. After it warms up it idles right at 40. The lowest I've ever seen it was last week at the track when my car was pretty hot, around 25-30. other than that it seems to be okay. However, I do have 66K on the car. Im probably answering my own questions. If I do get one, it'll probably be the ls6 one Katech offers.

Re: Oil pump...is it worth it?
Rule of thumb is 10PSI for every 1000RPM. So for 7000RPM you need 70PSI. If your current oil pump deliver the PSI you need for your RPM then you don't need to change it.
However it's always good to have cheap insurance.
