Default What damage from overheating?

I overheated my engine the other day. I had a major design flaw in my cooling system and ended up with a huge air bubble near the thermostat so no water could flow into the engine. I had already filled the block from the upper radiator hose. I currently have no water temp gauge hooked up. The fans kicked on in fast and the heater hoses got too hot to touch. The radiator hoses were still cool.

I shut it off and let it cool for a few days. I started it again today and it sputtered and surged and finally died. Now it won't even start at all. Just turns over and over and doesn't fire. There was a little smoke from the exhaust when it was turning over.

What kind of damage am I looking at for overheating? What can I check? I am hoping for something simple, but it rarely is.
thanks

a blown headgasket will keep the car from starting because you will have little to no compression in the affected cylinders. you must have compression for the motor to run.

definitely a blown headgasket.

the only way to tell if you have a cracked head is to pull the head and have a machine shop check it.

Do a compression test before you pull the heads.

OK, so I disconnected the battery for a few hours then reconnected. The engine was cold and this time it started right up but was running really rough and surging. At least it started. Could this be limp mode? Which sensors can cause it to shift to limp mode? If the temp got high enough to go into limp mode, would the DTC have to be cleared to shift back?

I pulled the plugs and didn't notice any water. I am going to do a compression check tomorrow. I still need to find someone local who can ATAP it for me. That would help tremendously.

I'll let you all know what I find.
thanks

Cracked head gastket(s) and warped head(s). Not saying thats your problem but those are things that happen when overheating. After shutting it off, it gets even hotter before starting to cool off.

I was thinking blown head gasket too because of the little bit of white smoke. how can I tell if the heads are warped? Would that cause the car to not want to start?

Looks like I am going to have to pull the heads to be sure.

I wouldn't know why the car doesn't start.
Your pretty sure this is a result of overheating assuming for sure it did overheat? The ls1 can be drivin 50 miles in limp mode while overheating.
