Default Engine assembly and clearance questions

I am rebuilding my LS1 with new bearings, bolts, gaskets and rings. If everything is stock spec and nothing was reground, do I need to check all the tolerances? The bearings that came out looked close to new and the motor has 63K miles on it so I doubt any material has been spun off the stock journals.

Also, I got Katech rod bolts. What should I torque these to since they aren't torque-to-yield bolts?

FYI, Katech told me use a TQ of 50 ft/lbs on the rod bolts.

Dan, it's probably too late to help any, but when I assembled my last motor using all GM bearings, I didn't check any clearances since everything was going back together "as it was" so to speak. Seeing that you're using aftermarket bearings, it probably wouldn't hurt to at least check a couple of random clearances (1 or 2 mains, 1 or 2 rods), but I don't think it's absolutely necessary to do so...

Has my Helm's manual been helpful?

Well, i was thinking of checking the clearance on the mains last night when i put the crank in but i was thinking about the bolts. I have torque to yield bolts and you can only use them once. Now the rod bolts I can reuse so I will be checking the clearance on those. And yes, the manual is helping tremendously. Thanks again!

Hi, I think this was discussed a while ago and I think the conclusion was that standard main bearing cap bolts aren't tty. Are you using aftermarket bolts for your main bearing caps, if not you should be able to tighten them up as standard. You can check clearances with plastigage and also check that the crank rotates freely once all the bolts including the crossbolts are installed and torqued. Should be fine at that. Mike.

i would atleast line hone the block. and the check the main by using the old bolts or get a new set if you have thrown your old ones away. cheap insurance.
