Switched from 5w30 to 10w30. Now oil pressure is 5psi lower.

I changed the oil today and decided to go w/ Mobil One 10w30 after reading it may help the oil consumption and up my pressure a little. My motor has 40k miles and I've used Mobil One 5w30, changer it every 3k miles. Before I changed I checked the pressure and it was around 40psi at idle in drive. After I changed it, the pressure is at 35psi in drive. This has me concerned. Now, I'm thinking my oil pump was getting weak to begin with, and with the heavier oil it is having trouble keeping the pressure up. What do you all think?

I also might add, I finally sprayed a can of GM top end cleaner through the motor before changing the oil. The idle is MUCH smoother, and throttle response seems a little improved. I don't know if this would have anything to do with oil pressure or not.

im no expert but the pressure should have gotten higher if it has to flow a thicker fluid. when i did my first oil change on my car after i bought it my pressure dropped slightly also. not sure what oil was in it but i havent had a problem and that was months and a couple oil changes ago.

I run Mobil 1 5w30 and I am considering changing to 10w 30. Does anyone know if the heavier weight will reduce oil consumption? I don't know about you, but my LS1 eats oil like crazy!

If you're getting consumption with Mobil 1 5w30, the switch to Mobil 1 10w30 might slow it down a little bit, however even the Mobil 1 10w30 is a tad on the thin side (at 100C) compared to other 10w30 oils out there. You might want to try Redline or Amsoil, both of which are thicker at operating temp. For comparison, Mobil 1 10w30 has a viscosity of 9.8cst at 100c, while Redline is 11.0 and Amsoil is 11.9.

I used to run 5w-30 Amsoil Full synthetic in mine and it burnt around 1 to 1-1/2 quarts of oil between each oil change. I took someones advise on the board and tried some "normal" non-synthetic castrol 10w30 and I do not consume ANY oil now and my oil pressure did not change at all. I have put over 3K miles on this oil and made numerous passes at the track(33 to be exact) and it still has not burnt a drop. I'm not saying it will work for anyone elses car but it sure did work for mine! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />
