Default MS4 and cam help...

I am looking to buy a cam only set up and i want the biggest bang for the buck. I had read up on the MS4 cam for a while and how streetable it is.But i dont understand how such a large cam is so streetable. Also this is my daily driver with 90,000+ miles on it so i dont want to blow anything up (trany, rear end, bottem end). I was realy wanting the MS4 but at the same time i dont want a car that is going to suck down gas like no tommarrow even know i dont know how it is on gas milage im assuming it cant be that good. If anybody has any advice on this or different cam advice it would be greatly apreacheted*
Thanks,
Ray

You heard wrong. The MS4 is not exactly a streetable cam. Granted, it can be tuned to allow you to drive it every day, but with that kind of overlap, you're going to hate it unless you have a master tuner do a kickass driveability tune to it. If this is your first cam, I'd recommend going with something mean, but with less aggressive lobes (so you don't need to buy the high dollar springs) and a little less duration (so you won't need to keep your tuner on speed-dial). A 228/232 .588/.592 110LSA +4 is about as good as it gets for a cam-only application. Good lope and good power under the curve.

That 110LSA cam would work great with your 5.3L heads. Go any bigger and you might run into P to V problems though.

I have the MS4 in a M6 car with stock gears and a mail tune from TSP(full dyno tune once I get the heads and intake I want) It drives great for especially considering how "big" the cam is. I have been using it as my daily driver car for the last 2 months since my LT1 decided to drop the oil pump pick up tube(it's been cold and i just didn't want to work on it). It will surge under light throttle under 2100. It pretty much won't surge any time your over 15% throttle or have a load on the motor. But it will pull 6th down to 1100rpm not much power but will pull slowly and smoothly if you give it some gas. I'm not saying I would recomend this cam as a DD especially if it's your first cammed car. But if you can put up with some surging it definately possible. I sure with a real tune it would also run much better then mine does as I said this was just a mail order tune I got from TSP back when the MS4 was first released and the local LS shop around here was to back logged

G5x3 on 110 with Yank 4000, daily driven, no complaints about drivetrain, only about loud true duals.

I am sorry but if you are looking for a big cam to make big power please dont put a 228/232 in your car, it would be a waste of money and time. A lot of driveability is in the tune so if you get a decent tune on the car you should be fine. I think TSP sells that cam package for the MS4 for $700, if you ask me thats really not too high dollar for a cam that should easily pick you up 60 rwhp. I have heard from many people that the MS4 is daily driveable because of the new lobes on it that bring the power in earlier. I daily drive the MS3 with stock gears and don't have a problem with it. If you understand that when modding your car you have to give up a little driveability to make big power then you can easily deal with the MS4.

Both MS cams are very easy to tune. I did one last week and could have sworn it was a 228 cam. I would have to say it is one of the easiest cams to tune.

yes you will blow several things appart on your car. if you cant afford to replace your rear end, transmission and motor dont mod your car. also if you cant have it sit for a prolonged period of time dont mess with it.

the biggest milage eater is a stall and a heavy foot.

I think it's an awefully big blanket statement to say he will blow stuff just because of a cam. It's fair to say you have to pay to play, but many people on this board have run h/c packages for years on a stock rear end, tranny and internals. Once you do mod your vehicle especially with a heavy foot you can expect things to need replacing sooner, especially a clutch. With a good tune, and decent clutch your vehicle should run smooth for a while as long as it maintained. I've had my h/c package for over 2 years with no major problems, 20k miles were put on the h/c in the fist year as my daily driver. I say go for it, but keep future goals in mind when selecting your cam, i.e. forced induction or nitrous. Good luck.

1.) I daily drove my new longblock with MS4 and stage 2.5 heads in Dallas stop and go traffic for a week and a 1/2 with only slight issues (it was 112 outside).
2.) If the tune is right you can drive the car, higher rear gears will be a pain starting out.
3.) Make sure if your gonna mod, you can aford to fix it.
4.) Have fun

This is a foolish statement...
Tell that to this guy
https://ls1tech.com/forums/member.php?u=64001
He just made 415 rwhp cam only on a mustang dyno with that cam.
By the way, that is a 75 rwhp increase.
