My 02' used less than 1/4 qt in 3000 miles with Royal Purple 5-30. Probably closer to the 1/8 mark than a 1/4. I'm very happy considering there are some tough miles mixed in between the oil changes. Car has 6K on it.

For reference my LT1 355 with 50k miles on it being raced 3-4 days a week and sprayed never burned a drop of oil noticeably. People can say oil cconsiderable oil consumption is acceptable, etc, but I disagree. I'm about to put some zero gap rings in my LS1 and hook up a vaccum pump. I hope this fixes the problem. These cars obviously create ALOT of crankcase pressure resulting in an over-active PCV which can't do **** and therefor causes the pressure to stay int he crankcase where it causes more blowby. Any flaws with this theory? I think this is how my '01 with 14k has gone south after a H/C install by a very reputeable shop.

I pulled my intake off at 1900 miles and there was oil everywhere. I'm about to do the pcv mod that was previously listed in hopes to fix it.

My car burns 0 oil. It has almost 2000 miles on it. Got oil changed @980 miles. I am running Mobil 1 5W-30 and a crankcase breather. I read 0 crankcase pressure 1500-3000 RPMs. I have been averaging 50% city driving and 50% WOT highway driving.

I thought i was the only one who was going through this..but apparently not. I have an 01'SS Convertible with 21,000 miles. My car burns/consumes about 3 quarts(synthetic 5W30) every 3000 miles. ITS BRUTAL!! I have told my dealership I will not let them change my rings and i am currently trying to get a hold of one of the regional guys. Maybe if we all make enough noise they'll swap the engines? My goal is to have an 02' LS1 installed. I am currently the Quality Manager for a tier 2 supplier to GM St.Catherines engine plant, and I have spoken to some of the engineers who have informed me that the PCV definitely sends oil through on the passenger side cylinder head. (during high RPM) I am currently just living with this problem but not for long.. I want my engine replaced. I didnt pay $47,000CAD to carry a case of oil in the trunk!! So far they cannot prove that changing the rings will solve the problem. It will take time to build up the history. My advice to everyone is to not let them change your rings. Your engine will never be the same.

If so, could you share your experiences with us? I was thinking of getting a GReddy catch can setup but sofar it doesnt look like I need it.
Are you saying that if I look in my throttle body, I will see evidence of oil? Im not doubting you Im curious.

Just because the F-body '01 and '02 have the LS6 intake doesn't mean that it has the LS6 valley cover with the new PCV fix. Does anyone know for sure? I thought only the vette got the fix.

If you pull off the intake you will definately see it. The PCV systems on these cars just plain suck. MANY people have problems with rings on these ls1's as well. My car has both problems.
I guessalot of people don't think much of the oil consumption and just add oil. When I see cars running at the track almost all of the ls1's smoke more than any other car out there.

Another '02 that doesn't use the slightest bit of oil.
But I do have piston slap and lifter ticking at start up.

For the people using 5W-30 Mobil 1 an d burning oil it sucks, quit using it.
Go to oiltown.com and buy the Royal Purple 10W30 and you should notice a big difference including higher oil pressure and a smoother feel under high revs. If that doesn't work get the new PCV valve. It's about $3..

A smoother feel under high revs? You cant be serious! Mobil 1 sucks? After more than 8oo passes with mobil1 5w30 my M6 has 42psi at idle in Fl, 56 to58 psi above 2500, and over 70 psi going down the track. I also have 48k on the car. Mobil 1 sucks? I just dont get some people!

My car(2002) was useing oil the first 9k miles. I kept going back to the dealer every 1500 miles because it was useing oil. I caught them in several lies saying it wasn't low even though it didn't register on the dip stick a few times and the low oil light came on. I talked to GM and they gave me a 100k mile warranty but the best part was, at 9k miles it stoped using oil. At 12k it still goinf strong.
I drive my car daily but it's very short trip. I live 5 miles form work. At the time it stoped useing oil I drove to Myrtle Beach and back. I think maybe the rings finnaly sealed is why it stoped useing oil. All those short trips didn't give the car time to break in. My 2¢
