Default What does "Sleeve" mean (engine terms)

anyone have pics of an engine sleeve?

I know that they are used to make big bore motors... are they pieces of metal that are the size of the combustion chamber?

Anyone have a pic of them?

How does a sleeve drop?

thanks

Here is a pick of my head swap.....the sleeves are clearly visible in the cylinders. As you can see, even stock displacement engines (such as mine), have sleeves. Without the sleeves, aluminum cylinder walls wouldn't be able to withstand the enormous pressure that occurs during the combustion process.

I can't accurately answer how the sleeves drop....I'll leave that up to someone more knowledgeable than myself.

BTW...I apologize for the pic size. I'm at work and have no way to reduce it.

There's different ways of putting sleeves in. One way is to soak them in liquid Nitrogen, slide them into place, and then when they warm up, they will be like a "press-fit" bushing. Another would be to literally press-fit them in with a really big press. I would think the first way would ensure stronger "bonding".

One way they can slide is if the o.d. (outside diameter) of the sleeve is not quite big enough to make up for the shrinking and expanding of the metals.
