Re: Need help removing harmonic balancer/crank pulley
I went to AutoZone and did their lend a tool thing where you pay them around $40.00 which they refund when you return the tool within seven days. I was told the same thing about the special GM tool, but the big 3 prong puller from AutoZone worked fine. You will get to a point where the puller will not totally remove the pulley. When you get there you must use a prybar (I used the handle of my floor jack) and carefully loosen the pulley until it comes out. Be sure to hook the jaws of the puller on the center part of the pulley and not the edge so you don't damage it.
Putting it back on is a different matter. You have to lube the center area with oil and get it started back in the hole. The crank bolt is not long enough to tighten at this point. I had a friend hold a 2x4 over the pulley and I hit the 2x4 with a hammer to seat it evenly until it was in far enough to where the crank bolt would thread. I then ran the crank bolt down with an impact gun (if you have air tools) until the pulley was fully seated. You then remove the old pulley bolt and thread in the new one. (bolts are only $2.50 from GM and you must use a new one because they are torque to yield) Torque the new crank bolt down to 37 ft lbs. then turn it an additional 140 degrees. For some pictures that might help go here...http://www.torquecentral.com/mods/GM...ll/default.asp
Good luck, it sounds like alot but it's not hard at all.

I've got a write-up on my website. It's complete with the correct part #, so that you can go down to Pepboys and borrow it for free.

Is your car an A4 or M6? You have to stop either the crank pulley from turning or the flywheel in order to break the bolt loose. I have an M6 so I just put the transmission in reverse and that did the trick. I've heard of guys with autos using a wrench to wedge the flywheel, but don't hold me to that.
