Heads and Cam! which ones?
There are multiple combinations out there now that seem to be turning out decent numbers... in an M6 car with other bolt-ons (headers, lid, etc...), there is no reason that you shouldn't be able to lay down 410+ RWHP and anywhere between 390 and 420 RWTQ.
The Thunder 224 cam matched with either GTP or JPR heads seems to make a real stout combination. Of course, being Canadian, you may prefer to go with something from ARE- you honestly can't go wrong there. The setup I am going with, though, is the LGM G5. That cam coupled with their heads seems to be making some really nice power. In addition to that, they are local to me; so I am comfortable with Lou and the rest of the LGM folks.
All of that being said, though, you need to decide what your intended use for the car is, and go from there.
I know this is a big download, but it's well worth it to download & print the minigide: http://www.motionsoftware.com/minigide.htm The minigide has excellent info (IMO) about the various components of an engine and how they affect each other.
Comp is another site that has info on valve timing: http://www.compcams.com/information/tutorials/
Also, several fellers have actually posted what their experiences have been w/ their respective cam choices (and mods): http://ls1info.com/camstats/showdata.php The main site: http://ls1info.com/ also has numerous articles and reviews about sundry parts of the LS1 powered vehicles.
And recently, CHP (Chevy High Performance mag) had their annual camshaft issue. If ya hitcher local library, they *might* have the last several years worth of issues. CHP does a good job of explaining all about cams.

I'm looking at the JPR S2 heads, they can't be beat for the price. TR224 112 cam or the Hammer1 or 2 cam.
